I'm 16 weeks on Friday and I've already got a huge bump! this is DC2 - I'm quite tall (178cm) and normal(ish) build ie. size 14 - thing is I'm absolutely terrified of gaining loads of weight with this pregnancy - I know i shouldn't even be considering dieting and I wouldn't... but I just wish I could relax and enjoy it like i did with my first... Obviously I'll do whats best for bubs - no question about it - but please help me stop worrying! Any advice out there?

Just what I needed to hear... And i do know this, its just the visions of only being able to wear a mumu by the end of it keep popping into my head :-)

I am also following your pattern - I guess its the same for eveyone with second pregnancies...

Thanks.

Jesus sittingbull that's not what I needed to hear! - i put on 5 stone with ds and took about the same as you to lose it all, he's now 12 months and I've lost another stone, during pregnancy I ate like a pig, did no exercise; basically sat around stuffing my face with cake feeling sorry for myself. I am much healthier now and fitter than probably ever before, I wouldn't have a chance to be lazy during another pregnancy even if I wanted to - am I delusional to think it's possible to do things differently (ie not become a whale) second time around?!

OP I've been attending a weight management group for pregnant women and new(ish) mothers since I was pregnant last time which is run by midwives (who've struggled with weight issues themselves) - I believe it's absolutely possible to not gain a huge amount while pregnant with careful control, I've even met women through the group who've only put on a few pounds so have effectively weighed less very shortly after giving birth than they did prior to getting pregnant.

I would ask your midwife for advice, there may well be a similar group in your area, I've met some lovely women there plus had peace of mind of being able to chat to midwives informally once a week. I understand your concerns and I think it's important you don't do anything drastic, however a little exercise and healthy eating will not hurt, ask your midwife for more information :-)

I guess the thing is, before I fell pregnant this time around I was actively trying to lose weight - i'm not that heavy, 79kilos before bubs came along - more to get fit really - a few spin classes a week, watching my diet etc. So its been a bit hard to switch my approach to food ie. Feeling guilty if I so much as look at a pastry iyswim?

I'm walking 30-40 mins a day and eating OK (maybe a little more chocolate) but i just can't kick this worry... I suppose i should just roll with it and try to focus on something else!

I'll chat to my midwife next week and see what she thinks - thanks for your thoughts Nicecupoftea

I'm very worried about gaining weight, as I struggle with keeping my weight at a sensible level anyway. I usually exercise a lot to help, but I'm 16wks and have done anything just because I'm too shattered. I've started walking to and from work and am hoping to work up to a bit more exercise to hopefully help.

I signed up for those baby development emails, and today's one said this: (it's aimed at Dad's)

'...Say it again: It's not fat, it's not fat , it's not fat . At 16 weeks pregnant, FAT is a four-letter word, and she spends every minute of every day wondering if her body will ever return to its original shape. Banish the word "fat" from your vocabulary starting now. If you absolutely need to reference your wife's size, memorize this scientifically correct synonym: maternal storage tissue...'

Not very helpful, or reassuring, but made me :o

My advice- dont weight yourself Wink

I don't think I've put on as much this time around as I'm still in my usual size but in maternity sizes. With ds1 I went up 3 sizes by the end but I definitely ate for 2!

I'm 33 weeks' I'm trying to eat sensibly and get in a bit of excercise etc but really I'm just listening to my body. If I'm hungry I eat.

I had a bump much earlier on this time but I levelled out around the 2nd trimester. Dont think I'd put on much extra weight just bump. I'm noticing now tho that I'm gaining everywhere. My poor thighs Blush but i wouldn't say I'm eating any more than I had. I think it's just how my body reacts to being pregnant.

Poppy thats brilliant - Fat is a four letter word for me at the moment :) I guess its just changing my mindset and relaxing into it... Thanks for all the advice - feeling better now. I'm going to sit on the couch and have a guilt free biccie!
