Insomnia in Pregnancy

Has anyone else had this? I'm not talking about just needing the toilet a lot in the last trimester, and thus bouncing up and down to the loo, but proper not being able to sleep for weeks on end.

I'm 24 weeks now, and from 6 weeks pg, have been managing a max of 4 hours or so a night - normally we go to bed at 10, I will finally drift off sometime between 10+11, and then wake up between 1 and 3 and not be able to go back to sleep. (last pg it was from about 24 weeks onwards until DS was born)

Midwife said to see a GP if it didn't improve, GP said nothing she can do, speak to consultant, consultant said I could possibly use antihistamines occasionally, but she'd recommend that I don't.

I am BROKEN with exhaustion, have a 2.4 yo DS, and work 5 days a week too (not full time, thank god, but the commute is getting hairier by the day!).

I cannot drink any tea (makes me chuck, always has done), warm milk likewise, have tried horlicks/ovaltine/hot choc, warm bath, no caffiene in the day, no chcolate in the day (this one was VERY hard to do :o)

I think I'm starting to get SPD now too, so cannot get comfy at night, which is making it worse. Oh, and DS is a poor sleeper, so I never have a night where I can guarantee an unbroken sleep even if I do drug myself up. Antihistamines do work for sleep, which is great, but leave me very drowsy the next day (it's just zirtek, btw, 10mg, nothing crazy :))

Anyone who can advise a way to get some sleep between now and baby arriving, I will give you a Biscuit :o

Relaxation CDs are very good.

Sorry, no real advice, but commiseration: me too! I sleep 1-2 hrs at a time most nights; some nights I might get back to sleep after 2-4 hrs awake with enough time for a little snooze before the alarm goes off to wake me up to go to work...

Hi, just wanted to say that I feel your pain. I seem to get insomnia in phases. I am 25 weeks now and for all of 23/24 I wasn't sleeping, but finally managed to nod off with some warm milk and some visualisation techniques (basically just imagine yourself somewhere really relaxing) a few days ago and feel like a new person! Sleep deprivation is the devil! Especially before the baby! Also, not sure if you are allowed to take it, but before I was pregnant, if I couldnt sleep I would take phenergan and it knocked me right out so don't know if you could try that? Pregnant people take it for nausea too....

I started hypnobirthing classes about ten days ago at 35 weeks, after having very broken sleep for a lot of my pregnancy (regularly waking up at 3.30 or 4 am for at least a couple of hours), and since making a point of listening to the Rainbox Relaxation cd at bedtime, have slept a lot better, despite finding it annoyingly hippy.

Kveta · 15/02/2012 13:17

hmm, so it seems relaxation hippy CDs work. will see if I can get some on the ipod and give them a go - any in particular? Alex I think phenergan is an antihistamine too, so would probably have the same woozyness of any other antihistamine the next day. But I will bear it mind for my next MW appointment!

thanks!

I know what you mean, I thought the same (a load of hippy rubbish) but honestly it really helps. It will also relax you for the labour too. I have been listening to Natal Hypnobirthing Relaxation CD for about 2 months now.

mumsrthebest · 15/02/2012 14:24

www.natalhypnotherapy.co.uk/7.html. You dont need to buy the full set.

Kveta · 15/02/2012 14:26

thanks mums will give it a go. Am planning the most medicalised labour possible without having a C-section, so not too fussed about relaxation techniques for it, but will certainly bear that in mind! :o
