Hi all, just hoping someone can help...

I'm nearly 17 weeks pregnant and from 15-16 weeks felt little flutters, and I'm certain it was the baby as it is my second so I've felt it before, and it was becoming a pattern as it always happened as I sat down on an evening. Anyway, since I was 16 weeks I've had a viral infection and haven't felt anything since. I contacted my midwife as am really worried and initially was told that at this stage not feeling movements is not a cooncern and they wouldn't do anything about it for a few weeks. But because I have already been feeling it, and because with DS1 I was feeling him frequently by now, being told this does not make me feel any less worried. I therefore contacted the hospital again today as I was considering paying for a 4D scan to check everything is okay, and I spoke to a different midwife, who said that the reason I am not feeling it at the moment is most definitely because I am poorly, and that when you are unwell you are less likely to feel the baby's movements. Has anybody else experienced or heard this...?

Thank you all in advance. I've arranged another appointment with the community midwife for in a couple of days, but until then I guess I'm still worrying! x

Depends what you are poorly with really! If you have a stomach upset then this will mask it. I personally would try not to worry the baby is so very tiny that it could easily be hiding. Also regular patterns of movement are nto really paid attention too until 28 weeks. And you will be having your 20 week scan soon, so unless you can easily afford it why not wait? MW might be able to hear a heat beat on the doppler, which will help!

I don't know about being ill affecting the movements, but I had the same where I felt baby move for a couple of weeks and then had about 2 weeks where I barely felt anything at all. The midwife said it was okay up until about 20 weeks, so I didn't worry too much but if you don't feel anything I would probably call again

its really common not to have regular movements this early and is not significant. Try not to worry, its such early days, baby is prob just in a less easy to feel position now!

I had fairly regular flutters at 18 weeks then nothing for a few days. They came back of their own accord after much stressing.

I often get flutterings identical to a baby at regular times of day. I am NOT pregnant. Apparently it is the intestines/bowel having little spasms. This went on for weeks at one point. I was seriously convinced it was a baby I was feeling. It could be that being Ill has changed your bowel movements slightly and the spasm has stopped?

I was told the same thing at 23 weeks, apparently when we are unwell the baby conserves his/her energy as a way of protecting themselves from getting unwell also. Can't say if it's true or not but makes sense and as soon as I felt better he started kicking away as usual. Don't pay for a 4d scan at this stage it's too early save that for when you will see all the good bits - you can aak for a reassurance scan from your hospital, or go into your antenatal monitoring unit and they will check for heartbeat etc. Xx

Thank you all lots. Really appreciate your responses. Hayley that is exactly what I wanted to hear, and yes I suppose it does make sense! Fingers crossed all is okay with the midwife tomorrow. Thanks again everyone x
