Heartburn ....

Any ideas??

30 weeks gone ... heartburn is baaaaad! When I was pg with DS I chomped on Rennies and they helped but they don't have them here. I have tried Gaviscon tablets and Mylanta tablets and they do nothing!
What else helps? At the moment I am struggling with even the blandest of food ... it hurts and burns going down let alone when it repeats on me ...
At the moment I am attempting to drink my bedtime Horlicks (last of the party animals me!) and that is hurting all the way down ...
Am not enjoying any food at all
Help!

Hi Ghosty, I too sufferred badly, and I'm afraid to say nothing helped me at all. The only relief I got was from drinking ice cold milk by the gallon. Pineapple is supposed to work but I hate it! Not much help I know, but it did disapear the second ds was born!

Ghosty · 18/11/2003 09:58

Thanks Northerner ... glad to know I am not alone ...
I would drink more milk but I don't really like it that much and I get an awfully bunged up nose if I drink too much of it (am usually a dairy free freak in a non pregnant state!) ....
I will try pineapple - presumably fresh stuff, as I like that but don't like the tinned stuff, and it is readily available here in NZ ...

I was also like this - with both pregnancies. Gaviscon liquid (the newer extra thick formula) was the only thing I found that worked.

I've also heard of the pineapple (yes, fresh), but like Northerner I also don't like the stuf!! Must be worth a try though!

My heartburn was worst at night, so I found that by eating my main meal at lunchtime & just a snack at tea time, I'd control it better, and possibly not throw up!! Oh the joys of it all....

Good luck, Ghosty. Sorry I can't be any more helpful

Definitely Gaviscon Extra. It was brilliant for me. Hope it works for you Ghosty xx

Gaviscon liquid... I still have bottles stashed all over the place.

mumbojumbo · 18/11/2003 11:38

My GP prescribed Gaviscon Advance. Relieved the symptons rather than cured tho'. The aniseed flavour was pretty dire at first, although I got used to it eventually. If its any consolation, not had any heartburn since ds2 arrived, so there is light at the end of the tunnel. HTH.

CnR · 18/11/2003 14:21

Gavison liquid works well. I had gallons of it on prescription whilst pregnant. Sadly I still get it now even though DD is 19 months old. Never had it before DD was conceived though

motherinferior · 18/11/2003 16:35

Acupuncture worked for me, I have to say.

3GirlsMum · 18/11/2003 16:43

Gaviscon tablets never worked for me, but the Gaviscon straight from the bottle did, in particular the aniseed flavour. It was the only thing, in each pregnancy that did work!

cebe · 18/11/2003 17:01

Note to all - I've been buying Gaviscon for most of my pregnancy, silly me as a clever person would know to get a repeat prescription on the NHS! Think could have saved more than £100, as does add up when swigging direct from the bottle in sheer desperation!

Cha · 18/11/2003 18:11

Queen of Heartburn here. I had it from the second I conceived my first child until the day she was born - same with the second. It hasn't truly gone away this time either.....
This is what got me through

Gaviscon, prescription 500ml bottles, peppermint flavour, 2x a week.

Fresh pineapple (tinned or juice won't do)

Sleeping halfway up a mountain of pillows

Avoiding greasy foods (esp takeaways) and dishes made with lots of tomatoes

Drinking gallons of milk (sometimes four pints a day - NOT recommended...)

Eating main meal at least 4 hours before going to bed. This last one I did not work out until second pg, though I was told it enough times. It really makes a difference. REALLY.

Good luck - it is sooooooooooooo horrible, I do feel for you xxx

Ghosty · 18/11/2003 18:56

Thanks everyone .... Looks like I am off to the chemist to get Gaviscon liquid then and then to the shops to get some fresh pineapple ...

I know what you meant about eating your evening meal early Cha, but trying to persuade DH to do that is an uphill battle. About twice a week and once at weekends I insist on having dinner all three of us with DS at 6pm but DH hates it ... he likes to eat at 8.30pm ... I will have a word ....

Shame about the tomatoes ... I love tomatoes ...

had v bad heartburn in all pregnancies; tried EVERYTHING but only zantac (ranitidine) tablets as prescribed by my consultant worked, and they really did work a treat.

splash · 19/11/2003 22:32

hi, ghosty, I have always had bad heartburn and sympathise with you, last time I was almost crying with the pain of just drinking water. until like jasper the doctor gave me zantac, this worked wonders and helped me get through the last weeks. Its like a miracle drug for heartburn, please try, but for anyone else reading this in their first trimester it is not recommended. hope this helps.

Ghosty · 19/11/2003 22:40

Thanks jasper and splash ... I will ask my midwife about zantac ....
I think what gets to me is that even the blandest things like water and crackers hurts ... I don't remember it being this bad with DS although I did suffer then too ....

ooo you've reminded me of the dreaded heartburn. i suffered on days i wasnt throwing up, some days i'd get both.

the gaviscon liquid really helped, i kept a small bottle in my bag at all times, had one by the bed and one downstairs (the huge bottles). i too used to swig from them walking down the street.
