Baby hiccups

How often does your baby hiccup? Do you think it's related to what you eat or drink?

Baby was hiccuping last night after the Indian I had. He started again this morning, maybe cos I've had cold water?

He seems to hiccup most days, but I can't figure out a pattern.

I think it's just that some babies are hiccupy, others aren't, no pattern. I can't see how what you eat or drink will have any effect as it's amniotic fluid that they are swallowing.

DD was very hiccupy before she was born. No pattern to when or what I ate or drank. Now, she gets the hiccups EVERY TIME she laughs. Without fail or exception.

I want to know what hiccups feel like? I know that I feel a lot of movements, but which are kicks, which are turns and which are hiccups? Thanks.

chocolate they are little rhythmic pulses. They couldn't be mistaken for anything else! I think I felt mine first around 21-22 weeks, but didn't know it. I thought the baby was punching or kicking me repeatedly. It happened again later on and then I figured out what it was. DH said the baby was farting, ha ha.

He will hiccup for 10-15 mins or so sometimes. I try to rub him where he is hiccuping in case it helps him stop, but I don't think it does make him stop.

fliss I guess he will hiccup a lot when he comes out!

My DS used to hiccup loads before he was born... I mean a couple of long sessions practically every day.

It didn't seem to follow a pattern of things I'd eaten or drunk.

For a few months after he was born he was also prone to hiccups, so guess that's just the way he was made. He is 14 months old now and is 'normal' in that department!

Hi laf, my baby has only had hiccups a couple of times and I drink ice water all day, its the only soft drink i really enjoy (and am partial to a curry!) so not sure there is a connection?

MillyStar · 12/02/2012 18:10

I've never ever felt my girl hiccup and I'm 31+3!

DeeBeee · 12/02/2012 18:12

I am 30 weeks and the baby hiccups 2 or 3 times a day pretty much every day. Can't find a connection to anything I do, I find it pretty strange but apparently it's just their system gearing up for breathing

Harry hicccups a lot at night. xx

Mine gets hiccoughs quite often- and although I can't be sure, I do think it can be related to eating & drinking- I had a very strong Thai curry and it hiccoughed ferociously afterwards- also I've only had about three units of alcohol throughout my whole pregnancy, and two of those got it hiccoughing wildly, too. I suffer from quite bad acid reflux at the moment, and if I'm feeling acidy that's often when the baby hiccoughs, and if I take Gaviscon it stops it. Having said that, sometimes it gets them for no obvious reason, too.

FundusCrispyPancake · 13/02/2012 14:35

Mine was getting hiccups regularly 3 times a day between 22-35 weeks. Felt like having a frog jumping in my belly - it is a regular rhythm and so feels very different from the random kicks and punches.

39 weeks now and it only gets the hiccups once every few days. My diet etc hasn't changed so I don't think that had anything to do with it, just depends on the baby I suppose.

One thing my midwife did say is not to count hiccups as daily movements as they are involuntary.

stripeyZ · 13/02/2012 14:52

My baby gets hiccups all the time. He has them at least 5-6 times a day. I've noticed they usually happen after I've eaten but I'll wake up at night & he has them, so who knows!

Im not keen on them tbh they worry me for some reason.

MiauMau · 13/02/2012 19:19

chocolatesparkle I used to do that too as a small child, but I grew out if it. I remember making laughter even more infectious :o

KatAndKit · 13/02/2012 19:37

I thought I was feeling my own pulse right at the bottom of my bump. It comes and goes, i had thought perhaps it depended on how I was sitting or lying, but could this be hiccups?

stripeyZ · 14/02/2012 11:59

Sounds like it to me. It can feel a bit like a pulse/heartbeat if the baby is head down.

LAF77 · 17/02/2012 16:31

Thanks for all of your input. It does seem to be random from all of your experiences and comments.

BTW, baby started hiccuping like mad after I went to the loo at 04:30 this morning. Sometimes he will hiccup after I sit down from walking around, so it isn't necessarily food related!

When I was pregnant with DS I used to feel him getting hiccups all the time.

In this pregnancy (I am 31 weeks), I haven't felt any hiccups yet!

All babies seem to be so different.
