Hi just wondering if anyone has had experiences with early scans? I am 7/8 weeks and have had a MMC before.

have heard that sometimes they cannot see a heartbeat at this early stage and am a bit worried that this will make me feel worse not reassured!

Thanks!

This for me was drip fed agony.

Nothing seen on early scan...come back in 10 days...i was so distressed and upset and in agony for those 10 days, i wish i had a date to work towards and not been given early scans.

BUT

Early scans have aslo allowed me the time to choose how to end the pregnancy on each occasion. To settle in my mind and come to terms, to make plans and arrange the next few weeks with the least amount of disruption.
Very mixed for me me Sad

I have had early scans in both pregnancies at 7 weeks and 8 weeks. Heartbeats were detectable at both of mine.

Have you had an early scan before? It's an internal scan. It does not hurt. It does take time for them to locate baby which feels like hours. It's minutes but it's long minutes...... If all ok they will show baby and if kind like our hospital - give you a blurry pic.

If your dates are roughly correct then they should almost certainly be able to see a heartbeat. If they can't then your dates may be out and they may say come back in ten days.

I had a scan at 5 weeks due to pain and spotting, 3 prev MC's and lots of gyne issues - saw sac, no yolk, no baby but that's relatively normal at 5 weeks (internal scan). The sonographer pointed out a dot inside the sac she thought may be it.

Went back for a scan at 7 weeks (12 days later, external scan) - saw feotal pole and little flashy heartbeat, baby measured 9.7mms.

Lost all symptoms of pregnancy at 10 weeks (possible MMC) so went back for a scan at 11 weeks and saw a very defined little baby Smile

DS is now 6 weeks old and laid out on the sofa next to me.

I've had two miscarriages diagnosed by early scans. For me it was a good thing that I had the scan even though it was a horrid way to find out as it did mean that I could get it over and done with faster. The first time I did have to wait two weeks between a scan at 8 weeks and one at 10 weeks, but to be honest, I knew it was hopeless at the first scan. The second time I had a scan at 8 weeks and it was confirmed straight away as a miscarriage.

This pregnancy I had early scans at 6 and 9 weeks for reassurance - there's no way I could have got to 12 weeks without a scan! The heartbeat was detectable at 6+4 although I was totally sure of my dates. Mostly if they can't see a hb by 7 weeks it is either a case of wrong dates/late ovulation/miscarriage but empty sac not big enough to confirm this.

If you are going for an early scan I would recommend 9 weeks as the best time. If your dates are a week out you will still see an embryo with a strong heartbeat. If it's bad news it will probably be a clear cut case, not come back in ten days.

wishing you all the best for a very good scan and a healthy pregnancy!

Like Katandkit I would say 9 weeks is the best time for an early scan.

With first pregnancy I had a scan at 6 weeks and saw a heartbeat so relaxed loads had a private early scan at 11 weeks and found out baby had not developed past 7 weeks.

I went on to have a successful pregnancy but wouldn't have an early scan until 9 weeks and now pregnant again and did the same this time.

For me a scan any earlier would not have given me reassurance either way.

Good luck with your pregnancy.
