You sometimes hear stories how people have to make a mad dash to the hospital in the middle of the night and end up going there in pyjamas etc.

Did this ever happen to you?

With both babies, waters broken and then contractions started and were close together, went straight to hospital in what I was weari, so nighty first time (12 midnight) and jeans and top (3.30 pm).

MsGee · 12/02/2012 19:30

I wore track suit bottoms, t shirt and comfy shoes. I looked lovely because the outfit was set off by the fact that my waters continued to gush leak all the way to the hospital. So soggy trackie bottoms really.

I did express quite strongly mid labour that I needed to get changed into a pink nightie that had been bought for the occasion. I was ignored on the basis that costume changes were not a priority Grin

WhispersOfWickedness · 12/02/2012 19:38

MsGee, you needed a pair of men's cycling shorts Grin

The second time, I had brought with me the same nightie that I had given birth to dc1. At some point I decided to change into it and got as far as taking off t-shirt and bra and then hit transition and the urge to push, so ended up giving birth naked Grin Think DH was still clutching said nightie as dc2 popped into the world Grin

openerofjars · 12/02/2012 19:40

DH's massive sweatpants, some kind of enormous top, maybe shoes? I couldn't have cared less if I was naked, to be honest, I was just so glad to actually be in labour by then.

Abcinthia · 12/02/2012 19:43

I wore jeans and a vest top. I actually changed my top because the one I was wearing was too dirty so despite having contractions every 3-5minutes and feeling the urge to push, I made my mum wait whilst I hobbled upstairs and put a clean vest on. No idea why I felt it so important Confused

DerbysKangaskhan · 12/02/2012 20:19

No, my kids have all woken me up in the early morning in labour, but no great gushing until much later.

With DS2, I arrived in one of my husband's shirts, an old skirt, and a cloth cap (and shoes obviously). After the assessment, they told me just to put a towel around myself and make my way to the room. Then later my shirt came off. I ended up giving birth with only my hat on. Grin It still makes me chuckle that I was happy to be naked except for my hair.

Purplehonesty · 12/02/2012 20:27

WMD I have one of those pig/nuke tshirts, it was my dad's and I snaffled it.

I wore maternity black stretchy trousers and Jane Norman top. I blowdried my hair and wore makeup and generally looked vary nice. Fast forward 24 hours I looked like a drunken bloated tramp. And I couldn't fit into my going home outfit cos I wasn't superskinny like I had imagined I would be. Oh the idiocy of it all!!

Ginger4justice · 12/02/2012 20:37

Pjs, it was the middle of the day though.

My defense: i'd been having contractions for 4 days and hadn't ate or slept much in all the that time. I'd spent the whole time cuddled up on the sofa with my tense machine slowly working my way through the whole of virgins catch up on demand and saw no point getting dressed. Midwife came to see me and said I was 10 cm. My DH did suggest I change into jeans/trousers, I think I ignored him or just stared at him and the midwife gently pointed out to him we were in a rush and maybe he should go get the hospital bags. Spent the rest of my labour in only my baggy t-shirt so I think DH got over the embarrassment of having to walk through the car park with me Grin.

33goingon64 · 12/02/2012 21:36

Trackie bottoms, t shirt and hoodie. It was boiling in the birth centre so took everything except bra and socks off (not sure why I left those on...). Midwife came in and said 'hmm, would you like to put your knickers back on for now?' It all happened so quickly I gave birth just like that. Looked down during being stitched up and couldn't believe I still had my stripy socks on. The indignity of it - couldn't someone have taken those off for me?

Clandy · 12/02/2012 22:11

After my waters broke I thought for some strange reason what me and dp were wearing was of utmost importance and spent time ironing clean (matching Blush) tops.... Fast forward 2 hospital trips and 36 hours I went in to give birth in pj's and huge fluffy dressing gown and didn't care one bit. Didn't last long as through a gas and air hysteria I became unexplainably naked and to this day dp can't tell me why I decided to pull a strip tease Grin

NotFromConcentrate · 12/02/2012 22:20

This thread has inspired me to leave leggings, a top and appropriate footwear next to my hospital bag in case I need to transfer in from my planned home birth! The leggings could also be thrown on under my nightie. A true capsule wardrobe!

With DC1 I was already an in-patient (pre-eclampsia) so when I was whizzed down to labour ward at midnight thanks to the arrival of scary blood results, I was already in pyjamas.

DC2 was induced 24 hours after PROM, so I was showered and dressed in normal outdoor clothes (and heels!)

StealthPolarBear · 12/02/2012 22:25

Pyjamas would have been better. Ny waters broke over my only pair of mat trousers that still fit so I went in a hugely stretched pair of tracksuit botoms and a pair of socks with Rudolph on. With a pompom red nose. Because it was April and dh thought it would be amusing

rednellie · 13/02/2012 04:19

I got transferred during my homebirth - have not a clue what I was wearing. My Mum and DH dressed me so it was almost definitely not matching, smart or respectable. The rest of the time I was mostly naked!

They also left me at the hospital with my totally inadequate hospital bag with no 'normal' clothes, no money and no mobile. Woke up the next morning and had to stay in my nightie and no way of contacting DH to tell him to pick me up! Grin

MilkywaysAndBump · 13/02/2012 04:48

We went in at 11.30pm, but my contractions were far apart enough to put on my dress and leggings I was wearing during the day. I changed into a nightie as soon as i got to the delivery suite. If you go in wearing pyjamas no one will look at you twice; everyone's in their sleepwear in the delivery wing/maternity hospitals!

SuiGeneris · 13/02/2012 05:36

Not a clue. Tried the pool and by that stage I was wearing one of DH's t-shirts. Hospital gown after that. Really, it does not matter. Nobody cares by that stage, least of all you. Nobody will remember. Most first pictures of babies I see involved a mother in a hospital gown. I would just make sure you have a hair brush and some lip balm in your bag. They were the only "grooming" I could deal with after the birth and was glad I had them.

Runlolarun · 13/02/2012 05:50

I think I would rather have died than show up in my pajamas, probably why my labour lasted 40 minutes!

lolajane2009 · 13/02/2012 06:21

I went at 1am in a pair of leggings and a T shirt. My waters had gone 6am the previous day though.

Yummymummyyobe1 · 13/02/2012 12:06

I was wondering what to wear and I now know that my cute yoga outfit is okay. I am needing to buy a bikini for the birthing pool (what an image, a whale in a bikini. Greenpeace will be out calling for me to be freed back to the wild) OMG just realised 11 weeks and baby is due. xx

FlirtyThirty · 13/02/2012 12:09

Jersey dress...nothing else, inc knickers!
I could not have managed to put on anything more as pain was pretty full on.
Straight over the head, and off...

MooncupandPizza · 13/02/2012 16:33

Yummy - I had nothing on in the birthing pool. I had hoped for a pool birth but I don't think it had occurred to me to put a bathing suit in!

I was down to a vest only by the time I was getting in the bath and the midwife said I should take it off so I did.

Boobs are going to be out for feeding, fanjo needs to be out to let baby out! (though I guess if oyu are in the pool for a while, retaining some modesty makes sense..I was at popping point by the time i was getting in the pool and had been naked from waist down since being examined in triage)

33goingon64 · 13/02/2012 18:42

Would advise leggings perhaps not best as they are tight around the crotch and you don't want that post birth for a few weeks. Would suggest loose fitting trackie bottoms instead.
