Should we try for a baby?

Im 25, very happily married in a stable relationship... and broody as hell!! Have never given birth before and both me and my husband want nothing more than a child of our own.

The only thing preventing us from trying is that I am obese and I have heard there is a risks to both the Baby and I. I?m currently doing Slimming world, gradually losing weight and aiming for a healthy BMI. Is it irresponsible to start trying for a baby now? Should I go to the doctors for their advice or is that a really silly thing to do?

I suppose I have answered my own question really and I should wait but It?s just all that we can think of!! I just wondered if the risks are like the side effect warnings on certain tablets really and not a high chance of risk?.but then saying that I don?t want to take any risk with my babys health.

arrrghhhh very frustrating ? anyone in the same boat?

Hi, my BMI is 30 which is the level where the risks rise and as such I might not have all the options open to me for birth. Eg, I might not be able to go to a midwife led unit, hospital is the most likely. None of it is set in stone but it is definitely an extra risk factor.

I am unexpectedly pregnant so I can't offer any thoughts on making a decision. The only thing I would say is I wish I'd taken more care over my general fitness levels. Pregnancy can be hard on your body, let alone birth.

Best wishes whatever you decide

Well there are risks but lots of people do have very healthy babies when they are bigger so don't rule it out. Go see the doc keep on at slimming world (which is fab) but personally I would have a go. Smile

Hi. Before i got pg with ds i was super fit, very slim and thought that pregnancy would be a breeze. In fact, towards the end i was so exhausted that i could barely haul myself off the sofa and i dread to think how much more i would have struggled if i hadn't been fit to begin with. That's just my experience though and i'm sure others who have been a similar position to you will be able to give you a better idea.

I guess i feel like you've answered your own question and for the sake of 12 months healthly eating, you could have a much happier pregnancy with less risk.

If your BMI is not massive then there is unlikely to be a problem. Mine was 32 at booking in this pregnancy and I haven't been treated any differently.

Losing weight will improve your chances of conception so that is one thing to bear in mind. however, if you are both ready to start trying now, there is nothing wrong with starting trying whilst you are losing weight. It might take several months, and you could lose another stone in that time!

Slimming world is a good healthy plan which you can stay on, with some modifications, when you are pregnant to avoid the risks of putting on loads when you are overweight already.

I would lose the weight first, you have time on your side!
You can go to the Drs but they won't say much, start taking folic acid three months before you start trying. I lost 10lbs before getting pg this time but was still heavier at the start of this pregnancy than my first and I really wish I had lost more weight and focussed on strengthening my core muscles, as I am sure I would have had an easier time of it. I was still a bmi of 27/28 so not too bad but would have been better smaller, especially once you add on the baby weight post pg! You will have extra blood tests (GTT) if you are bmi 30 and higher in my PCT which I am pleased to avoid!

@ the end of the day it's up to you and what you feel comfortable with (I know that doesn't help you) But Slimming World is one of the weight loss groups/schemes/plans you can continue with safely during pregnancy and is approved by whatever board midwives are signed up to

boohome · 10/02/2012 12:20

I agree with katandkit about not being treated differently unless BMI is massive - mine was 34 at the booking in appointment, and the midwife wasn't at all bothered about that.

I didn't get any GTT blood test either.

MillyStar · 10/02/2012 12:38

My bmi was 34 pre pregnancy and I'm now 31 weeks with a healthy girl ;)

The only way it has effected me is I can't have a water birth but not overly bothered!

I'd go for it and keep on slimming world, it could take 6 months for all you know and you would have lost a lot of weight in that time

MillyStar · 10/02/2012 12:40

Oh yeah and gtt text which was bloods, a sugary drink, 2 hours wait then more bloods, nothing to it

MillyStar · 10/02/2012 12:41

Test not text!!
