3rd baby; bigger or smaller?

I'm 27 weeks with my third and my DC2 was 2lbs bigger than DC1 which I was told was to be expected as it was a DS as opposed to DD and also your second is generally bigger than your first.
Just wondering if there was a rule of thumb for the weight of the third? Do they tend to be bigger or smaller than the second?

Well, I'm 40+5 weeks with DC3 and am humongous! My first was 7lbs 12oz and second was 8lbs 1oz, they were girls. This time round I'm having a boy, totally different bump (all forward, no noticeable extra weight) and am overdue! I have had 3 false alarms and experienced a heck of a lot of braxton hicks! Bump has also been measuring 2 weeks ahead of what I am in comparison to last 2 which were always measuring smaller?!

It may depend on the sex of the baby but most women I know with 3 or more seem to have bigger or same size babies. They usually say that as our tummy muscles and uterus have a 'memory' of pregnancy that our bellies tend to get bigger earlier and have more space for babies to grow too.

Good luck! :D

I think it varies quite a bit. Like you, my DC2 (boy) was 2lbs heavier than DC1 (girl). DC3 (girl) was inbetween. DS was a few days overdue though and the girls were both a week early so that may have played a part. I thought DC3 was going to be the biggest as I was huge, but I was wrong!

MandaHugNKiss · 09/02/2012 16:07

My stats probably won't be helpful

DC1 - DD 7lb 13oz
DC2 - DS1 8lb 1oz (so, about the same despite being a boy)
DC3 - DS2 9lb 12oz (!)
Currently 26 weeks pregnant with another DS and measuring 4-5 weeks ahead so, perhaps, growing another biggun.

However, DC1&2 have one father and DC3&4 another - he's taller but not built massively (takes size medium/large clothes) which maybe skews my results. Either that, or I had undetected GD!

BellaLEL · 09/02/2012 16:46

MandaHugNKiss...Can I ask, how was it giving birth to an almost 10 pounder? I'm so petrified I'm not going to be able to handle it! Was it a normal delivery too? Good luck with DC4 though, hope it all goes well for you! :)

blondiep14 · 09/02/2012 16:50

Jeez, I'm hoping smaller but dreading not.
DS1 - 8lb 1oz
DS2 - 10lb 1oz
Hope DC3 isn't 2lbs heavier again!!

Thetokengirl · 09/02/2012 16:56

DS1 - 10/7s late 7lbs 1 1/2 oz
DS2 - on time 9lbs 1 1/2 oz
Told with DS3 that I was big for dates and had to have a rescan, which didn't really achieve much, and had heard about the idea that each baby is bigger so getting really worried now....but when he popped out on time he was 8lbs 4oz! Grin

blondiep14 · 09/02/2012 17:04

Token, I now have hope - thank you!

MandaHugNKiss · 09/02/2012 17:04

Firstly, I'll say that yes, it was a normal, vaginal delivery. And I didn't need stitches Blush

But it was a very quick labour, (read no time for any pain relief other than a bit of gas and air that didn't seem to do anything) and I felt very shocked and traumatised by it (which sounds ridiculous compared to what some women go through, but I really did have flashbacks for some time - I felt so out of control).

I'd say those feelings couldn't have been affected by his weight but labour with DS2 was the same length of time (around 1hour 40mins in total, going from 4cms to birth in the final 40mins) but nowhere near as 'intense' so perhaps it did make a difference.

Our first two babies were almost identical in size! I survived my whopper in one piece, and if it comes to it, you will too Smile

ABatInBunkFive · 09/02/2012 17:12

mine got smaller but the 10lber was easier than my 7lb third by a country mile

MooncupandPizza · 09/02/2012 17:15

My mum had 4 -
first - a boy - second lightest
second - a boy - the heaviest baby
third - me - a girl - the lightest baby
fourth - a girl - second heaviest

BellaLEL · 09/02/2012 17:18

Lifted my chin there, so thank you! :D
Both my previous labours were exactly the same, took the midwives by surprise for how quick I went from 2cm to 10cm!

Only difference with a lot of other ladies on this blog is that with my first two I wasn't late but in fact early. Which has made this wait even more frustrating as I was half expecting the same with this one. Maybe it's a boy thing?

So much bigger here:

DS: 9lb 1
DD1: 8lb 7
DD2: 10lb 11

But, no stitches and the teeniest graze which I couldn't even feel. She was just very, very looooong!

EsmeWeatherwax · 09/02/2012 17:27

Dd1 - 8lbs 10
Dd2 - 8lbs 3
Ds - 7lbs 15 and I was enormous, measuring 5 weeks ahead, measured 9 lbs on scan.

littlemissnormal · 09/02/2012 18:19

There's no pattern at all is there!

Both of mine were induced at 42 weeks so the midwife has said its likely this one will be the same but apparently 3rd labours are highly unpredictable!

Just got to wait and see then Wink
