Osteopath treatment in 1st trimester?

I am planning to go for my first osteopath appointment soon for SPD/PGP. I'll be 11/12 weeks. Do you think this is OK? I have never had osteopathy so I don't really know exactly what it involves/if there are any risks in early pregnancy.

Thanks in advance for any info!

I don't know if this helps, but I've had chiropractic treatment (successfully) for SPD in my last pregnancy and I'm just going for my first treatment in this pregnancy as I can feel twinges again (at 19 weeks).

I realise these are different treatments, but my practitioner was able to talk me through what she would do, and explain the precautions she would take because I was pregnant. For example, she always took by blood pressure prior to each session (and was the first to realise it had shot up in late pregnancy) and would avoid specific manipulations etc. The treatment was all very gentle, but effective.

hopefully your practitioner will be able to talk you through any risk/precautions in a similar way.

Good luck and I hope you get some relief from your treatment!

When I spoke to my osteopath he checked that I was past 12 weeks as he said that he 'didn't see ladies before then'.

Does your osteo specialise in SPD/ PGP? Mine saw me throughout my pg (and even before) and was v helpful, but I did research her credentials carefully.

The general rule is to avoid treating pregnant ladies in the first trimester. This is not because of the likely hood of adverse reactions to treatment, but purely because the risk of miscarriage is highest at this stage and for insurance purposes it is best to 'steer clear'.

After 12 weeks however, osteo can be very effective for SPD. You will have your history taken, be examined and then diagnosis should be explained. Wear big knickers and a vest top! Treatment is usually a combination of targeted manipulation, massage, stretches and prescribed exercises. Take any current prescriptions Just make sure your osteopath is registered with the General Osteopathic Council and good luck.

If you tell them how pregnant you are and they're fine with that, and are registered, then it'll be fine. I've had around 5 treatments throughout (12 weeks now), and they avoided any laser or needle treatment, and went very gently (not so much cracking as gentle manipulation), but it was still very effective. Enjoy.
