We used the BabyBjorn active carrier as it had back support. My dh is not quite as big as yours but stocky nonetheless and found it really comfy. They're not cheap though, we thought it was money well spent at £70ish (about 7 years ago) as we used it more than the pram, in the house and until she was nearly 2 - she did start of very tiny thoughGrin

a moby?
or a babyhawk or other mei tai?

Yama · 06/02/2012 20:20

Ds lived in the Babasling on dh. It was bliss for me.

NeilsBoar · 06/02/2012 20:20

I carried our DS in a Moby one until he was about 6 months, however I'm about 6" shorter than your husband.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 06/02/2012 20:22

Kari-Me stretchy wrap still gets used by my DH to carry our DD in from time to time (she's now 2yo) - it's very long, so it would probably go round your DH okay!

There's a whole board devoted to slings and carriers in MN Talk, so you may find more suggestions there.

BartletForAmerica · 06/02/2012 20:22

My husband loves the Ergo.

Elfontheedge · 06/02/2012 20:23

Mei tai types are good as they have good long straps and you can do front and back carries. Baby Bjorns aren't good as they don't support baby's hips well.

pootlebug · 06/02/2012 20:46

In my experience more men like buckles than long wraps & ties (although of course there are blokes out there who are happy with the latter). If your DH is one of those, I'd go with either the Manduca or Connecta. Both are very adjustable so you'll be able to wear them too. You can use them for back carries when the baby is bigger too.

If he will do a wrap, something like the Moby, Boba Wrap or other stretchy could be good - again, very easy to adjust for different sized people. I also love the Hoppediz Hop Tye which is a type of mei tai made from wrap fabric. All of those come in plain bloke-friendly colours.

Chynah · 06/02/2012 21:01

Dh is only slightly smaller than yours and we used a Baby Bjorn.

what about the babyhawk oh snap?

if you order direct from babyhawk you can play with their design centre (guaranteed to use up hours of your life!!)

wonkylegs · 06/02/2012 22:31

We had a close baby carrier with DS and it was fine on me (tiny 4'11") and DH (not so tiny fattish 5'11"), DH wasn't so keen on the colour (red) as he tends to err towards monochrome but he still used it a fair bit. We also had a bush baby carrier we he thought was more ' manly' but it wasn't so good as DS got bigger and he didn't sleep in it as much as the close carrier.

MiauMau · 07/02/2012 10:03

My mum gave DP a baby bjorn, she was feeling a bit nostalgic about the good old days when my step-dad used to carry my sister around in one of them. They used to be much softer and colourful though, now they've gone all commando and manly!

BlueChampagne · 07/02/2012 16:33

We both used Wilkinet.

ViolaCrayola · 07/02/2012 16:44

Another vote for an Ergo - my DH (6 ft 2, broad) still carries DS (2yo) in it now!

Babybjorns are not supposed to be good for babies' hips/pelvis/groin area (although I have never seen any actual medical evidence for this). They are also uncomfortable once the baby is older than about 5 months IME, and can't go on your back. OK for the first few months but the Ergo is a much better long term option - front or back carries, fully adjustable so you can both wear it. You can buy a newborn insert so it can be used from birth.

missingmymarbles · 07/02/2012 16:56

the only stuff i have read (admittedly not much Grin) about babybjorns is that they are paediatrician recommended and that they were designed with medical advisory input.

Fraktal · 07/02/2012 16:57

My DH wraps and uses a soft structured carrier (like an Ergo). He loves it and gets quite evangelical about the benefits!

FutureNannyOgg · 07/02/2012 17:54

We have a Sleepywrap, which is stretchy like a Moby, DH is 6'2" with a 48" (ish he's XXL) chest, I am 5'3" and a size 14/16 and we both used the same wrap. Just check the length before you buy as some budget wraps are a bit short. You'll probably need 5metres or so. Worth finding out if you have a local slingmeet, sling library or bw consultant so you can try before you buy.

FutureNannyOgg · 07/02/2012 17:59

I have a video somewhere of DH cooking in the kitchen, with DS in a wrap, singing along to Classic Rock on the radio.

lowimpactmama · 07/02/2012 18:08

Ergo - newborn insert for the tiny stage and it'll last years. DH (6'1) still comfortably carries DS (nearly 23 months and 91st centile for height) as would I if I wasn't 33 weeks pregnant! It is a fab fab sling.

we also use the close sling (in "manly" grey) for the early months and DH loves it.

pinxminx · 07/02/2012 18:09

Manduca works for both me and DH. It is really very comfy and suitable from newborn.

pootlebug · 07/02/2012 18:17

"the only stuff i have read (admittedly not much ) about babybjorns is that they are paediatrician recommended and that they were designed with medical advisory input"

If you read the specialised medical opinions published on the website, most don't even mention the design of the Bjorn carrier - they just talk about the advantages to a baby being carried in a sling www.babybjorn.co.uk/about-us/medical-experts/about-baby-carriers/

Also, they haven't been asked to compare a Bjorn with something else....just to comment on it in isolation. I don't rate the Bjorn at all. I have tried over 100 slings. But I still think the Bjorn is better than no sling at all.

PuraVida · 07/02/2012 18:27

My dp used a moby then an ergo

He hated the pram and always carries our DC

he's often found in the pub with a baby attached Hmm

MiauMau · 08/02/2012 09:59

I got a caboo for myself at the baby show in October (10 pound discount). DP wasn't overly convinced about it, until it was demonstrated and now he wants it for himself. Just got to wait for DS to show up first though :o
(not long now!)

lemniscate · 08/02/2012 10:03

Another ergo loving family. DH is 6'2 and I'm 5'6 but it works well for us both. Carried DS in it until around 2 and DD still going strong in it at 16 months. DH gets all soppy about his babies falling asleep on his chest Grin and we fight over who gets to carry DD. Rarely use buggy now. Think DH was surprised how lovely carrying the baby was. Ergo is definitely our best baby related purchase.

Wrigglebum · 08/02/2012 13:03

We had a Close sling (manly charcoal colour) and that worked well on 6ft2 16 stone DH and 5ft6 10 stone me. My friends with baby bjorns said they took a while to adjust between different sizes so they couldn't easily swap over when out and about. The close one was easy to change over.
Would have used it a lot more if it hadn't rained nearly every day the first few months of my son's life! Have got it all washed and ready hoping for better weather when this baby arrives!
