Is anyone else finding themselves falling for every cold that comes along? I know that my immune system is being suppressed because of the pregnancy, but these colds are completely knocking me out - can barely get out of bed and am feeling absolutely dreadful. I had my flu jab so I know its nothing too worrying, but its really getting me down. Has anyone else found they are experiencing similar, and, if so, can you recommend anything to relieve the symptoms a bit???

Yes - me too. They've utterly floored me. I never normally get colds and pre Christmas I couldn't move from my bed for 2 days due to a cold. This current one has been miserable but at least I'm not bed bound; I've had it for nearly 2 weeks and it keeps mutating into different forms of cold. I HATE IT!!!
Sorry, can't recommend anything in particular. I've been going on the honey and lemon home made lemsip alternative but it's not the same as the real thing. Thankfully I've not had a blocked nose so I haven't looked into options for that but I doubt they are plentiful. Drinking lots of water seems to help flush things out.

Arg!!!! So annoying.

You're not, by any chance, extraordinarily hungry at the same time, are you? I'd like to think that was illness related....but I think not...

So sorry you are suffering Cosmo - you have all my sympathy! I really hope this doesn't go on too long, half term may be a huge washout.

I am actually not eating very much through it, but haven't had an enormous appetite since being pregnant. Not being smug thinno, am actually the size of a whale so think the baby is living off my blubber at the moment!

Hope you feel better soon!

You too! I have this strange desert island feeling...that we're the only people with bad colds out there. Surely there are more of us?

Achooo. Moan.

Last week I was on cold no.2 (30+1) and it still hasn't shifted completely [this was a "present" from my boss who sits directly opposite me and who kept sniffling and snorting most of January - thanks, boss!]. The first one was just before Christmas ["present" from my hairdresser who kept coughing all the way through cutting my hair - thanks, hairdresser!] which dragged on for 2 weeks before turning into a nice little chest infection [was prescribed amoxicylin] - completely floored me for a week and a bit [never had a chest infection in my life before!]

I also had a flu jab and hardly ever get colds but I guess my immune system in pregnancy is completely off, hence these two colds. During the first one I didn't take anything apart from honey/lemon/hot water [+ antibiotics later on], this time around I took a few soluble Panadol [paracetamol] tablets which made some difference. But I still felt rubbish and couldn't get out of bed, had to take 2 days sick leave as I just couldn't move.

Apart from resting and taking an occasional paracetamol when the cold is at its peak, there is little you can do. It was really frustrating as people think "yeah, right' when you tell them you have had to miss work because of 'just a cold'. Well, in pregnancy there is no such thing as 'just a cold' - it is immensely painful and unpleasant. Plus I think a cold lasts twice as long when you're pregnant [it takes much longer to get rid of it]. My biggest thing this time round was a blocked nose, and of course, I couldn't take any decongestant that I would usually take when not pregnant.

Hope you recover soon - it sucks, big time.

God, I hate it when people go to work and act like martyrs then spread their bloody germs around! Utterly selfish. So sorry you are both poorly, I have retired to my boudoir to wilt gracefully upon my pillows... or just let my nose drip disgustingly over the duvet.

I have had a constant cold, hacking cough, sore throats in various combinations since December - just after getting the flu jab. I am so bored of it - felt terrible today - tempted to phone in sick tomorrow just for a rest. But with 2yo at home not sure how much rest i'll get. I would have done anything for a decongestant today. Anything :)

I didnt get a single cold with 1st DS - until 3 days before birth so was induced with the worst cold ever where you cant breathe. Happy days!

balkanscot · 07/02/2012 18:31

It all sounds very familiar, indeed. My second cold is currently making a comeback, after fooling me into thinking it's on the way out. Consequently, felt like a rotten vegetable at work all day today. Spoke to a pharmacist today about decongestant, she suggested to inhale just plain old steam. Apparently it's the steam itself rather than the stuff you put into the water that works.

Oh, and I forgot to mention nose bleeds while I had that chest infection in December. Scared the living daylights out of me.

Off to get my umpteenth packet of tissues... :sniffle:

ifherbumwereabungalow · 07/02/2012 18:47

You poor women!! I am so sorry that you are all suffering, yet, somehow, feel better that its not just me dropping tissues everytime I move at the moment. Rocket, I can't believe you had a cold when being induced, what a bloody nightmare! balkan, I may try the steam thing later... Thinking of all you ladies currently residing in a nasal nightmare x

Sorry to hear you ladies are suffering. I had one truly horrible cold about 16 weeks and nothing seemed to help. I coughed for an age afterwards too. Grim.

Since then I've been really well though - just wondering if you are all taking a good pregnancy multivitamin? They all seem to have a decent (and recommended) amount of vitamin C (high dose vits you'd normally take to prevent colds aren't approved in pregnancy), as well as all the other things to help boost immune system.

I've also been eating lots of fruit and veg, drinking cranberry juice (to prevent UTIs, but also has lots of vitamin C. Sorry if that's all obvious and not helpful!

Anecdotally, it seems quite a few people get a lot of colds after getting the flu jab (a few have you have said the same). Weird.
