New Mattress for new baby?

Not sure what to do about this as we have ds's cot and mattress and we were going to use the cot for new baby but I have heard you need a new mattress? The problem is ds hardly slept in his cot (v clingy and co slept most of the time then went in a big bed at 2.5) and his mattress was a v expensive one so feel its a bit of a waste but obviously if I have to get a new one I will. Any advice?

Hi, I have just bought new mattresses both for the moses basket and cot bed. I think that's the advice and I felt that one less worry was worth the cost - if that makes sense..?!

ShesAStar · 06/02/2012 14:18

Hi, I have the same dilemma but have decided to use the mattress again. I feel a bit concerned due to the advise given but every time I look at the mattress it looks so pristine that I cannot help but think to throw it out and buy a new one would just be a massive expensive waste.

I have bought new bedding which makes me feel a bit better!

New mattress.
I suppose depends what "hardly slept" in it means? Also how risk adverse you are. No way could I risk something happening to my baby and being able to blame myself for it.

igggi · 06/02/2012 15:33

...Having said that I do understand how bad it feels to throw away something that looks perfectly fine!

Kenobi · 06/02/2012 15:37

eeek, why are we supposed to get new mattresses? I know nothing about this!

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 06/02/2012 16:48

Is your mattress washable? Mine is, and it wasnt uber expensive either.
DS has been in the cot less than a year (coslept after moses basket and hes in his bed now at 16m! Just did not like the cot) I'll wash it just before DS2 goes in it. It hasnt been in storage or anything, and I know it is in good condition.

Moses basket mattress I had to replace (as well as the moses basket) as they had gone mouldy in the attic...

Kenobi it is recommended as a way to avoid SIDs.

igggi · 06/02/2012 16:56

I meant to add the FSID website says ideally a new mattress each time, they seem to countenance re-using one that has a completely waterproof cover but should also have to sags or other wear. (Please check the website rather than trusting my interpretation of it!)

igggi · 06/02/2012 16:59

I mean no sags of course Blush

Seona1973 · 06/02/2012 17:05

I reused dd's mattress for ds as it had a removable washable cover and the underneath was waterproof with no cuts, tears, etc and could be cleaned with antibacterial products. The SIDS website says this:

What kind of mattress should I use?

It is very important that your baby?s mattress is kept clean and dry. Ideally you should buy a new mattress for each new baby. If you are not able to do this, use the one you have, as long as it was made with a completely waterproof cover and has no tears, cracks or holes. Clean and dry it thoroughly. Check that the mattress is in good condition; is flat and firm, not soft; fits the cot without any gaps; and doesn?t sag. Never sleep your baby on a pillow, cushion, bean bag or waterbed.

ah ok thank you. So it's because of possible sagging causing the baby to get stuck in an unfavourable position that it's a bad idea, not just a reused mattress per se?

littlemissnormal · 06/02/2012 22:45

Ah thanks for this! I was going to use my current cot and Moses basket mattress for new DS as I thought the advice was not to use second hand ones.
That sounds like quite an important thing though.

littlemissnormal · 06/02/2012 22:46

Second hand from other people I mean Smile

igggi · 07/02/2012 15:07

Kenobi I don't think it's just the sagging, they are stressing washable , so maybe they suspect a link with bacteria (which could breed from the various discharges of a small baby!)

Kenobi · 08/02/2012 11:07

Thanks Iggi. I shall investigate our mattresses.
