Was that the baby moving and when will I feel it again?

I'm a completely ignorant first-timer, 16 weeks pg, and last night felt what could be described as an energetic goldfish in my lower abdomen. I felt it very low down, sort of the same place where you would feel period pains and it lasted for about 4 seconds... Was that the baby? Is that where you would feel movement at 16 weeks? And if so, when could I expect the next hallo?

Could be, topoftheworld! When I felt my first baby moving, it was like a bubble or a fluttering of a butterfly. Can't remember exactly when I first felt it. I am 17 weeks pregnant now and think I've felt my baby moving this time (although I'm not sure).
If you have felt it at 16 weeks I think that's supposed to be quite early for a first-timer. So don't be worried if you don't feel it again for a bit.

Aaah, topoftheworld - sounds like it . It is early at 16 weeks for a first timer, I didn't work out ds was moving until about 21 weeks, but dd said hello at 15 weeks, so it could have been your little one. Feels a bit like gas bubbling away in there at first, then becomes like a tiny nudge from inside. You may have to wait a little before you feel another one, but enjoy it when you do.

Not sure about goldfish but it certainly sounds in the right place - low down in the belly. I'm 28 weeks now with first baby and can't remember what it feels like NOT to be kicked about inside - no complaints, it's lovely. You might find you have to be sitting absolutely quiet and concentrate to feel it again but soon you'll be feeling it all the time. Enjoy!

Like Wilbur, ds made himself known at 15 weeks and took me totally by surprise. But they are still soooo tiny at that stage, so it's a tiny feeling, IYKWIM. It felt like a little flick, as if someone was flicking a crumb off a table. Lovely, lovely feeling - congrats!!

Sounds like exactly what I felt at 16 weeks. I maintained it was the baby, because if it wasn't - then what the heck was it?

Ghosty · 16/11/2003 21:29

Sounds like it topoftheworld! I felt DS move at 19 weeks and that was a definite shift from one side of my tum to the other ...
This time I felt it at 17 weeks and it was like an air bubble popping in my tummy ... I put it down to wind but a few seconds later I felt a couple more in exactly the same place ...
Now, at 29 weeks I have an Olympic gymnast in there!!!!

In a few weeks, when it gets a little stronger, lie down flat, and put something on your tummy, i used a tv remote! Then watch it jump a little. I enyoyed this, as did dh, as at this point, he said he couldn't feel the baby when he put his hand on my tummy, but this way it felt 'real' to him.

It does sound like what I felt at 15 wks. By 18-19 wks I could feel the kicks into my hand and feel could also feel hiccups vs kicks. It is an amazing feeling for sure - makes it so real. What is ultra cool is the baby has been really quiet for a week while my husband has been away on business and he arrived back this morning, put his hand on my stomach and got a little kick in response. It is like the baby could recognise the touch...although all the books say that doesn't happen as early as 21 wks.

Thats a good description topoftheworld. Definitely sounds like right sensation and right place.

bluecow · 24/11/2003 12:30

Yep, think that's your baby. It's just unlike any other feeling really and it's so special!

ThomCat · 24/11/2003 12:58

If it felt like a fish I bet it was the baby. It'll feel like a large cod soon, either that or an octopus!

CountessDracula · 24/11/2003 13:14

And after that a huge mule kicking and hiccupping away! We called dd Muffin towards the end as she used kick and punch for hours on end. I loved it!
