How can you tell when a bump's really a bump of baby rather than of fat...?!

I'm 13+5 and currently craving a bump! DP's CONVINCED I've got one, and indeed I do have a bigger tummy than normal, but personally I'm not so sure - how on earth am I to tell the difference a bump of baby and one made of the chips and crisps and other variously shaped potatoes with fat on I've lived on for the last 7 weeks for want of 'morning' sickness allowing me to countenance the holier than thou pregnancy diet of which I'd dreamed...?

So how do the two differ please? Sickness starting to wane (never thought I'd see the day I'd deem 'only' being sick twice in two days healthy!) so, being the pot of anxiety I continue to be, a new 'symptom' in the form of a 'look at me mum! I'm alive and growing!' bump would be a delight beyond words! I just need to know how on earth to recognise the flipping thing?!

Fat sticks on everywhere. Bumps are all out in front. You have a bump.

ps, feel the need to confess, the fact that I think it's probably fat has does nothing to deter me from nevertheless stroking, cupping, and generally piling love and affection upon said mound (most pampered spot of fat ever if that's all it is!)

It's probably water retention rather than fat! I'm almost 28 weeks & still think mine could be mistaken for fat instead of a baby in some tops lol. I was craving a baby bump at 13 weeks as well don't think it really started to look like one until I was about 21/22 weeks. Women that had been pregnant seemed to spot it earlier but others didn't. In the last week iv only started having people ask when I'm due so it must now be obvious it's a baby, before I just got the wondering is she isn't she looks!

Thanks guys. So can you tell the difference yourself? When it's still only little does it in any way feel distinctive in any way or is it any higher or lower or something?

When you can't suck it in...

InmaculadaConcepcion · 02/02/2012 20:08

I think I was about four months when I first realised I had a proper "bump", rather than just extra flab and water retention.

Mind you, it was another couple of months before other people started noticing.

I thought I had a bump at about 16weeks-ish but it turned out to be wind..... My bump didn't really develop until about 21 weeks and no-one asked if I was pregnant until about 32weeks so I am assuming they all thought I was fat...

I had two people tell me yesterday that they thought I was fat, now they can see I am pg!!!! I am 21 weeks! But yes, there is some fat in there too.

I had a bump from quite early & loved the fact for once my tummy was all firm & not flabby!!!

McPhee · 03/02/2012 07:44

I'm 18 weeks today, and my bump seems to spread around the entire middle of my body. Not so much bump, than flump Sad I want a nice round cute bump damn it!

MeconiumHappens · 03/02/2012 21:33

Lay on your tummy in the bath then gently push tummy onto bottom of bath. You'll feel the bump if its a bump!

I just feel fat too :( I'm 29 weeks now and just starting to look pregnant. When I look in the mirror and see I look like this |) instead of this ( ) then I hope others realise I'm pregnant and not just hugely overweight.

I lost a fair amount of weight early on in pregnancy because of nausea/aversions, then I ate loads from weeks 18-26 and now I'm in the terrible habit of eating only once a day, but making it a big meal which is stupid really, since I feel very uncomfortable afterwards.

The top of the bump is hard, the bottom is a fatty squidgy tyre. If you take a look at some images on google of cross sections you can see that fat doesn't dissipate just because you're pregnant, it gets pushed outwards so you'll always have that layer of fat to hand when you're poking your belly.

I had a bump from very earlier on and at 28 weeks I love my bump especially when Harry wriggles post rub.

It is quite funnt though the bigger my bump get the further away I am when hugging DP. xx
