Pelvic girdle pain

Has anyone had pelvic girdle pain (early on) in their first pregnancy (with crutches and/or wheelchair) and escaped it in the second? Or had it again and it's been as bad/or worse? I want another baby but scared about coping with a toddler and being unable to look after myself nevermind looking after my tot too.

Hi LLK. Hope you are well.
I have had it with 3 out of 4 of my babies (currently suffering now with the 4th). I had to use crutches from around 28 weeks with DC3. I believe the SPD/PGP got worse as I was pushing a double pram everywhere while PG and had a horrible moment where I was unable to cross the road.
They were difficult days so I understand your concern. All worth it in the end glad to report :) But pls remind me of this. Am just 21 weeks now and suffering and is not funny Hmm
Good luck x

Oh you brave woman!! That must have been scary with the road incident! Apparently pushing trolleys/buggies etc can make the pain worse. What we put ourselves through for our babies!! It is so worth it, and just think, for every year say of PGP you have (if you have it for an average of 1 year per child) you're giving a possible combined average of 240 years of life if your 3 kids you had PGP with live til they are 80 - so that's 3 years for you, hundreds for them! I have tried justifying the pain to myself in so many ways! When I hear my little one giggle or watch him do something for the first time, it makes me want to do it all again. If I could do it minus the pain I'd be so, so happy, but I know that is unlikely, my body just doesnt like being pregnant :(

I hope the pain eases up for you - it must be so hard with 3 others to look after. Other woman who sail through pregnancies are so lucky!! Get in touch if you ever need a fellow sufferers ear. I'll hopefully be pregnant again soon, so will no doubt be going through it all again myself! x

Hi, fellow sufferer here. Have either of you had any physio for PGP? Up here you can self-refer so I have physio booked for next week but not sure what to expect or whether it will actually help or not .

Some days are worse than others but really want to avoid crutches/bedrest so have bought a bump/back support belt. Wore it for the first time today, was very tight and uncomfy but def lifted some of the weight off my pelvis.

Sigh, the things we do for babies Grin

Hi, yeah, I had physio by obstetric physios at the mat hospital I gave birth in for my whole pregnancy and for 12 weeks after, then I went on to a private physio for 3 months. Physio really helped. They kept on having to put my pelvis back into alignment, which was a big relief for a day or two until it popped out again!! The crutches were a pain to get used to, but really helped. The physio might fit you with a sacroiliac belt, which should work a treat! I was on crutches until I got too big to move at all and then went to a wheelchair for the last trimester. Not fun. sigh indeed!! How many weeks are you? Is this your first baby or do you have others to look after too? The physio will give you pelvic floor/core muscle exercises to do as well (which will help you pop your baby out in the end too!!) Good luck!

oh gosh i have just been told i have psd and have just been given a belt and the instructions for dos and donts from the physio!...I am only 4 months pregnant and so worried that this is going to get a whole lot worse! :(

lucylovesketchup · 02/02/2012 21:34

You might get better with physio and be ok. I know a girl who had it for a week, went to physio, got a belt and a manipulation and was fine after that! I was really bad, and only a small percentage are as bad as me. If it does get that bad then it will get better and go away so you can enjoy your baby. I had it from 6 weeks and had to give up work and was housebound, but that was really unlucky. If you do better than that then at least you'll know that it could be worse!!

I had it really badly in first pregnancy (from around 17 weeks, using wheelchair last 3 months but then I can't use crutches).

Had nearly 3 years before getting pregnant again (not planned to be so long), and this time round I was packed off to the physios immediately and it's been under control (as in just being careful, later an annoying ache) until around 35-6 weeks. Having Ds being 3 and able to walk well and understand has really helped - although have had to put him back in pushchair a bit simply because I can't catch him if he runs off.
The physios were also able to do a lot more this time as it was partly caused by imbalanced joints not just hormones.
It's now nearly as bad as last time, but I'm 37+4, so nearly there. Spending money on ready meals and getting friends to help out, rather than wheelchair hire so far.

Tea and sympathy to all fellow sufferers!
LLK - Loved the total amount of years comment -- must copy and paste somewhere for the DC to see in years to come Grin
Kirank - I'm just weeks ahead of you and feeling pretty rough with it. I'm hoping physio will be able to wave magic wand for you. Let us know how it goes.
notcitrus - Good luck to you, almost there! Good to hear the physios were so good with the pain control.
heymamma - Any suggestions as to where I can get belt, which type etc?

lucylovesketchup · 03/02/2012 21:16

ecstatica - Glad you liked the comment! I have a really good belt called Serola Biomechanics (serola.net). They're made in America - I got mine free from physio so I'm not sure where you could get one, but you could try their website. It is black and I think it is called a sacroiliac belt.

notcitrus - that is brilliant news - I'm very pleased for you that you haven't suffered so much this time and you're nearly there!! What did the physios get you to do to keep it under control? Did they put you in a belt from the start/get you to keep your knees together etc? I bet you're delighted to have escaped the agony of having pgp from 17 weeks! Hope it all goes away for you straight after the birth! Thanks for posting :)
