Usually there aren't any other symptoms. Sometimes you get the same symptoms as ordinary type 2 diabetes - raging thirst, tiredness and weeing lots.

Are bad headaches a symptom?

No.

WigWamBam · 20/01/2006 20:47

Bad headaches can be a symptom of pre-eclampsia though, so if you're having bad headaches, best to get the midwife to check you over.

headaches are common in pregnancy... or so my midwife told me! especially if you suffer from migraines.
i got the most awful ones during pregnancy,.. but you can take paracetamol

Mandymoo · 20/01/2006 20:50

I tend to get bad headaches after eating sweet things? Convinced myself it was gestational diabetes! Seeing midwife soon so will get it checked out - thanks X

there are certain trigger foods that can lead to migraines. have you ever had them outside of pregnancy?
chocolate is a trigger food

Mandymoo · 20/01/2006 20:56

well as wwb says, best to get it checked out! if nothing else it'll put your mind at rest

I had gestational diabetes quite severely (injecting insulin twice daily) and the main indicator of it was that the baby was huge...and the bump was even huger because I had polyhydramnios, which means lots of excess fluid. I was tested for diabetes because a different midwife saw me and said "My God!! This baby is HUGE!!) and sent me for a glucose tolerance test the same day. I did have the usual diabetes symptoms (thirst, fatigue, weeing a lot) but pregnancy being the way it is, I missed them. Bad headaches are more likely to be blood-pressure related and could indicate pre-eclampsia (I had that too) so should NOT be ignored.

Mandymoo · 20/01/2006 22:14

Do you think its worth calling mw over the weekend to get it checked or wait til Monday?

Don't leave it Mandymoo...pre-eclampsia is very manageable once they know about it, but it really isn't safe if not. If you haven't got it then you won't have lost anything. If I were you I would try and get a good night's sleep and call a m/w first thing in the morning. Ask them to do a blood pressure series. Tell them about the headaches. I got pre-eclampsia at about 28 weeks, was admitted almost immediately and kept in until DS1 was induced at 35 weeks because it got more severe suddenly. It sounds horrendous but I do have a beautiful healthy three year old now!! It may be that there's nothing wrong with you though - it can't hurt to put your mind at rest.

Sorry to harangue you. I hope it turns out to be nothing

Meanoldmummy · 22/01/2006 00:11

How are you today MM? Did you manage to see anyone today?

sniff · 23/01/2006 13:31

I agree with meanoldmummy I get huge when I have Diabetes whilst pregnant 24 weeks at moment with third and I am tiny at the moment compared to the last two I was also really thirsty really snappy and felt odd! not helpful I know

you could ask the nurse to test your finger or to refer you for a glucose tolerence test

Mandymoo · 23/01/2006 22:19

Midwife has tested bp, urine etc and cant find any reason for my headaches other than i'm 25 weeks pregnant, have a 3yr old to look after and am in the middle of having an house extension!! - still concerned tho and seeing midwife next week for routine check. Thanks all X

Hi there, I'm pregnant with my third child, whilst pregnant with my last son in 2003 I developed gestational diabetes, I felt 100% healthy and had no sypmtoms at all. My routine urine tests did not show any signs of sugar content at any of my checks,it was only after my blood tests at 24wks that alarm bells rang.I was called back for a blood glucose test, where you fast the night before, they take blood, then you drink 2 bottles of lucozade, hang around for 2hrs and then they repeat the blood test! I had this test on my first baby and was told all was well and expected the same this time round, only it was abnormal and my antenatel care was transfered from my local gp's midwife lead team to the hospitals diabetic clininc-scarey stuff!
Within 3 days of strict diet,no chocolate, limited fruits, even diet products were out of bounds, my sugar was still too high and I began injecting insulin 4 times a day! It made me ill, hindered my driving and was quite frankly too much with a 3yr old running around!!
I was scaned every 2 weeks and at 32wks I was told that my baby already wieghed 8lb 2oz
My first baby only weighed 7lb 2oz and I had to have suction to help deliver him,so you can imagine how scared I was at the prospect of delivering this little monster! I was induced at 39wks due to his size, laboured for 13hrs during which my partner took my blood sugar levels by pricking my finger and my mum injected me with the necessary amount of insulin every hour! Finally I was taken for a section as my womb had stopped contracting at 6cms!! My 9lb3oz boy was born within minutes,an hour after delivery both of our blood sugar levels had returned to normal Once I'd been moved to my room and the morphine had worn off I enjoyed a mars bar and a can of full fat coke-HEAVEN!
