Best clothes to disguise a very large bump a bit.

That's it really.

I'm 28 weeks with DC2 and my bump us measuring four weeks ahead already. (I have t1 diabetes and despite being 'well controlled' I am clearly going to have another big baby - all is healthy, just big)
It doesn't help that I am just over five foot and normally a size 6/8 so the bump looks huge on me - I look 38 weeks pregnant not 28 weeks Sad

I'm tired of the comments and wondered what type of clothing is best for disguising a large, all out front bump on an otherwise small and skinny person. Obviously not tight fitting t-shirts! I have quite a lot of empire line tops and dresses - but not sure about them? Big, tent like things?!

Bump

OK:

Black trousers, fitted
Black top, tight or fitted
Cardigan also fitted but bright colour like red or pink or cream. Fine knit, not chunky. Either side of bump, not on top!

That has been my uniform for months and I think it works...

At least, that's what I tell myself

I wear a lot of black at work...it's when i turn to the side and look like Mr Greedy that that look falls down!

Try a poncho/cape sort of cardigan. Covers everything really well!

Good plan with the cape/poncho - I might wear that over everything for the next ten weeks!

I think the problem with wearing anything loose or drapy is that you risk looking fat rather than pregnant! I am also slim with a giant bump (people were congratulating me at 10 weeks before we'd announced it Blush) but I have decided to embrace it as having seen myself in a mirror unexpectedly when wearing more "flowing" things I have concluded that I'd much rather look enormously pregnant than obese with a very odd body shape. 33+5 now so pretty enormous...

LoveInAColdClimate · 30/01/2012 16:46

Obviously not saying anyone on here who has embraced the drapery looks fat Blush. It must depend on body shape, but for me, loose and flowing = disaster.

I've got a big bump (25w with twins - it's going to get bigger too!) and I'm wearing black wide leg maternity trousers and a black jersey top. Topaz is right, it kind of makes the bump look smaller till I turn sideways...

Empire line would seem a good solution although it's not working for me. I'm short waisted and due to the twins I'm carrying very high (and low at the same time!) and my empire line shirts delineate the bump to the point where I look like I've been wrapped as a present. I've got a maternity coat that is fitted at the shoulders and arms and then just sort of projects outwards, that definitely hides the bump as I don't get any seat offers on the train (I thought I could take off the "baby on board" badge once I got past 20 weeks but apparently not).

Black maternity trousers are great with any top that goes with black. A lot of my tops would show vast amounts of belly if I wore them with normal trousers but because they all blend into the black trousers no one notices and I think they make the bump look smaller. Some days people have to double check I am 6 months pregnant!

I tried wearing normal clothes way longer than I should and felt so uncomfortable and unhappy, especially when I broke a zip on my favourite pair of work trousers!!

Hi OP

I'm loving ASOS maternity clothes at the moment (30 weeks) and I'm currently rocking a shirt very similar to this I find ASOS maternity very generous and good in the length as I'm quite tall (6ft)

The shirt paired with skinny jeans or leggings (maternity ones!) looks great, is very comfy and if you're feeling drafty just stick a vest under it!

Oooh i second the baggy clothes comment making you look just fat!!!I opted for all big baggy oversized jumper dresses but decided they make me look enormous!! so im sticking with leggins and tunic style cotton tops, black is definately more slimming- oh and team that with a coat ( obviously undone!) and a big chunky scarf!!!xx

BarnMummy · 30/01/2012 18:30

I would recommend a maternity wrap dress - I wore one to a wedding when preg with DS2 and hardly anyone seemed to notice I was pregnant! I am fairly similar size-wise to you (just over 5 ft and an 8-10) and my bump was pretty big...

Im 34 weeks short and very sticky outy, im mostly wearing a black mat dress from jojo or a black stretchy ( pencil???:-) ) skirt. With a black top for work. Not much hides it but any other colour seems to make me look like an egg cup, except for a couple of mat tops - not flowy though. Wrap dresses seem to make me look like a munchkin, i think cos my shoes are flat and geeky.

kickingking · 30/01/2012 20:57

Wrap dress or not, there is NO mistaking I'm pregnant.

I think I will be wearing lots of black over the next two months!
