feeling movement when your placenta is at the front

I think I can guess some of the answers to this really, but would like some reassurance all the same.
I am 20+5 and have felt minimum movement so far - a weeny bit of what may have been kicks but mostly more of a vague feeling somethings probably moving (turning the body, perhaps - I hope I'm making sense!)
Due to a health condition I ended up having an emergency scan at 17 weeks and was told the placenta is at the front so it 'may even be 20 weeks till you feel something.'
If you also had this, when did you feel more definite movement? This is my first baby.
Thanks

My placenta was anterior too and I felt nothing until after 23-24 weeks. I think the placenta just cushions all the little kicks so you can't feel them until the baby is much bigger and stronger. Don't worry!

RobinSparkles · 29/01/2012 22:37

I was the same with my first - anterior placenta, felt no movement until just over 21 weeks! Smile

Don't worry and congratulations!

RobinSparkles · 29/01/2012 22:41

Btw, the first movements feel like wind or when your tummy does flip flops when you're nervous but really gentle. It's really easy to dismiss as wind or something else.

RobinSparkles · 29/01/2012 22:43

Meant to add that it sounds as if you are feeling your baby move! As you get bigger your placenta should move upwards so you'll feel more of the kicks etc.

I had an anterior placenta & didn't feel anything until 22 weeks. Try not to worry.

babysaurus · 29/01/2012 22:51

Thanks everyone! While I presumed things were just weLl cushioned, its great to hear from some of you who didn't feel things until far later than I am now. Especially as the sonographers wording of 'may even be 20 weeks' going round my head. I have not had friends with similar experiences either so you've really helped, x

If it helps to reassure you, I had a 'normal' posterior placenta and didn't feel movement until I was 23 weeks pregnant. My 9 week old son is perfectly healthy (and made up for the late kicking by really going for it later on! I thought he was trying to escape through my ribs Grin)

Comgratulations!

When I said, to the MW, that I was feeling movement at 22 weeks she looked surprised.

babysaurus · 29/01/2012 23:10

Surprised at 22 weeks? That's good to hear as everything I keep reading seems to suggest from 17/18 weeks onwards.
So, does the placenta move after a while then or does the kicking just get harder? Or both?

OP posts:

Both. The placenta should move up as you get bigger and then as the baby gets bigger the kicks/movements get stronger. It actually feels like someone prodding you, but from inside Grin. After a while you will actually see bits sticking out of your stomach, it's freaky but marvellous all at the same time!

Oh, I'm so Envy I'm not having anymore!

I am exp baby no4, and this is the first time I have had an anterior placenta.

I only started feeling the rolling type movements you describe at about 17 weeks, where with my other three I was feeling movements at usually around 12/13 weeks!

The movements took another good few weeks to get regular and definite, so as its your first it sounds all normal to me! Grin

At 30 weeks this baby is by far the most active, and as someone else said has made up for it with an excellent range of kicks etc!

If at all you are ever concerned about movement or lack of then seek advice, no one ever minds and there is no such thing as wasting someones time!

Congrats btw! Grin

Totally normal. This my 3rd anterior placenta and I never really felt much until 23-24 weeks. People look horrified when you say you haven't felt anything yet! But it is normal.

HanaP · 30/01/2012 10:25

I am at the end of 29weeks and still cannot really feel proper movements.
Sometimes I can feel like butterflies in my stomach but it is very irregular.
I told my midwife and she said that the heart beat is ok so nothing to worry about.
But I am getting slowly crazy. I am still waiting and waiting for first movements and nothing. I hope all is ok with my baby.
I have ordered Angelsounds so I can at least listen to my baby heart when at home.

I also have the placenta at the front and expecting first baby.

Enfyshedd · 30/01/2012 13:48

Another anterior placenta here at 23+1 (1st DC), and only really started feeling anything I could describe as kicking about 7-10 days ago. For a couple of weeks before that I felt the odd flip-flop in my stomach when I was resting or occasionally when walking.

I keep being told to wait until I see a foot sticking out or get a kick in the ribs - might not look forward to one of those too much Hmm
