Hi, I am 28 weeks with our first baby, so far we have the following,
Clothes.....
12 Babygros, few newborn, 0-3 and 3-6 months.
probably 8 vests
a few pairs of soft cotton trousers and little tops.
three fleecey suit things from a friend.

an amazing swaddle blanket and a pair of VERY cute rabbit slippers (couldnt help myself)

A couple of blankets, towels and 6 muslins and one of those mini sleeping bags

Stuff.........
a cot
sterlisier
new born sized bottles just in case
a monitor
a thermometer
husband been busy building in wardrobe and the room is decorated.

Things on my "to buy" list,

a pram/buggy. possibly mountain buggy
a baby sling carrier, probably babybjorn miracle
a bouncy chair.
car seat and base, maxi cosi

SO my question is WHAT ELSE DO I NEED??? What stuff could you not do without????

Mega congratulations - HOW exciting!!!!

Would suggest:

DVD box sets for feeding.....
Tuupa ware for freezing left overs...

A toy that you buy for your baby so its the first toy the baby has been bought... if you see what I mean.

You don;t need as much as you think to start off with - you can shop more after too!

mpops · 27/01/2012 20:24

Cardigans or something similar (you probably won't need a pramsuit but you might find it useful if it's cold when your baby is here)

I'd suggest, if you're going to spend that much money on a carrier, go for the Beco Gemini instead of the Babybjorn Miracle. Much more comfy for you and the baby (www.becobabycarrier.co.uk/shop.asp?cat=8) and more versatile.

Further down the line (after about a month or so, depends when you start bathing the baby) you might find a little bath useful. We bought this Tippitoes one and it's really great (just the right size, excellent support, makes the bath so much more relaxing for us and the baby!): www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0037ZTT2A/ref=asc_df_B0037ZTT2A6303543?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&tag=hydra0b-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22206&creativeASIN=B0037ZTT2A

If you're going to bf, I'd suggest a wedge-shaped nursing pillow. Don't need to spend loads but it's really useful, I thought.

I'd also get something to put all the changing gear in: nappies, nappy sacks, creams, cotton... Anything you need when you're changing your baby, and have it by the changing mat/table. We have a simple cheap plastic box and it does the job perfectly.

Is your baby going to go straight in the cot? If not, you'll need an inbetween thing. We borrowed a crib off a friend as our DD only moved in her cot when she was 3 months.

A nice soft towel for the baby for when you start bathing them.

That's all I can think of for the first couple of months or so. I'll be back if anything else springs to mind.

Flisspaps · 27/01/2012 20:28

Nappies, wipes, sudocrem.

Nothing else really. You'll probably be bought loads of things when baby arrives anyway.

Cubtrouble · 27/01/2012 20:28

VERY excited!!!! Thanks!!! Defo some new boxsets needed, sex and the city and ER are well worn!!!

Tuppaware is a GOOD one!! and cheap!

HE is a boy! Which has really helping picking stuff, I was way too excited not to find out!!

He also has my three favourite books, Dear Zoo, hungry caterpillar and Goodnight Mr Bear!

Cant wait for him to come now!!

Find the shopping a challenge though- obviously MASSIVELY fun but trying to be careful with money so I am not really really skint, im going to take the full year off!!!

Mpops!!!!!!! that is a massively helpful post!!!! I am looking now!!!

I think the carrier will be well used, we like to walk around where we live and also on holiday so I will defo look at the one you suggested.

For going out I am going to make a baby bag, i do leather work, so it will give me something to do before he arrives!!

Mum has this big basket she used when i was a baby for all the nappy stuff in the house, shes going to make me a new cover for it to put all the bits and pieces in.

Likewise, the cot was my husbands, we took it and had it striped and repainted and it has come up beautifully!!

Flisspaps- your suggestions are on my list!!

Congratulations! They don't need much at all when tiny. But I would go more muslins, they really are one of those things you can use 6 of in one day.

Lucyannieamy · 28/01/2012 08:13

For baby you've got it I think, there is very little you 'need'. Only thing i tell all my pg friends is more muslins and nighties- you may get night sweats after birth (i did, 3 changes a night). Don't worry if you don't have it all before baby arrives, we didn't have the pram until 4 weeks after, just the sling. Don't recommend the baby bjorn, we used a wrap sling which I love, 'Victoria slinglady'.

Alligatorpie · 28/01/2012 08:43

I loved my baby Bjorne, more than my sling. I am going to buy a wrap sling this time and see if I get more use out of it. The pouch didn't work for me all.

Joygirl78 · 28/01/2012 13:58

Some things for you: lansinoh (very expensive but totally life saving nipple cream), arnica tabs for post birth healing plus tea tree oil for your bath, again for healing. Breast pads, comfy sanitary pads, big comfy knickers. Chocolate. Ready meals (or per make meals) for e freezer.
For baby: more muzzles (6 is not enough), have a new born size dummy in case baby can't find it's thumb and needs it, water proof sheet for cot/pram, little baby cotton hat, soft baby towel (primark do surprisingly good ones)

Cubtrouble · 28/01/2012 19:19

Ladies!!! Thank you all so much, i am adding the suggestions to my list!!!

Muslins top of the list!!

Keep the suggestions coming, this is GREAT!!!

Ok, another question! noticed today tesco has a baby event, huggies nappies half price. £4.99 from £9.98.

and johnsons wipes for 95p.

Would it be good to stock up, how many am i going to need- and what size!!! ;-o you can tell im new cant you!!!!! lol

Flisspaps · 28/01/2012 19:59

IMO ASDA's own brand nappies are just as good as, if not better than Huggies or Pampers, and cost less (2 for £10 and there are more in a pack than branded nappies) and their own brand non-fragranced wipes are also just as good as the branded ones and cheaper.

ASDA are also cheaper than Tesco.

Get maybe 2 packs of whichever ones you want though, because you could stock up on a particular brand and find that they don't fit your baby properly round the legs or belly and leak. You can buy more in once you know that they're the ones you want.

BikeRunSki · 28/01/2012 20:17

Lots of cheap cotton tops for you. babies can be very leaky ( mouth and bottom), and a supply of long sleeved tees you can fling in the machine with no bother is very handy. Primark do them for about £3 in loads of colours.

Groovymother101 · 28/01/2012 20:39
  • feeding bra
  • breastfeeding tops
  • lanisoh cream
  • loads of small bottles of water. Bad for the environment but a godsend for hours glued to sofa breastfeeding.
  • another baby sleep bag -one will inevitably get sicked on.
  • baby nail clippers
  • scratch mits
  • if you feel at all funny bout feeding in public - bebe au lait feeding cover. Godsend for me. Google them.
  • loads of maternity pads
  • big comfy pants
  • comfy trackie bottoms

Groovymother101 · 28/01/2012 20:40

Ps buy size 2 pampers. Most babies can go straight into them.

StickyGhost · 28/01/2012 20:47

Get more muslins, and how many sheets, blankets and towels do you have? You'll need quite a few. Also stock up on nappies in sizes 1 & 2, wipes, cotton pads, infacol and baby shampoo (newborns only really need to be washed with just water but sometimes the poo is just too stuck on, I used baby shampoo from 1st bath at a wk old). I'd definitely also recommend a Slumber Bear and/or something that makes white noise. They're kind of expensive but I got mine from Ebay - my DS is now 13 wks and it has paid for itself a thousand times over! Congrats and good luck with everything!

Purplehonesty · 28/01/2012 21:00

More vests. You might go through 4 in a day if you are unlucky and he is sicky and then you'll be washing all the time.
Moses basket
Good luck with little one

Cubtrouble · 28/01/2012 23:08

;-))))) the more i read the more excited I get!!! All new ones added to the list!!! Really helpful stuff, thanks sooooo much all of you!!

Ordered some bits today from american website swaddle designs, we bought a swaddle in john lewis and it is so soft and beautifully made, i think it will come in very handy, couldnt find any of their other stuff in the UK, so having it sent to friends, an extra sleeping bag, some wash mitts, towels with hoods, couple more swaddles and another beautiful stroller blanket (i have a thing about blankets! oh dear!) It was all in the sale so VERY pleased with myself!!

Also had a catalogue from JANE come today, really struggling to decide on buggy, would love a pram so he can lie down at first, april baby so will be reasonable weather and lovely to take him for a walk over the summer and snooze in the garden in the pram, firstly it was an emmaljunga- made in sweden-big tick and very nice but MAAAAASSSSSSSSIVE, decided we would be better off with something more rugged we will use for ages and could take on walks- we walk alot so it was the mountain buggy- takes the maxi cosi car seat, has a nice big seat and can buy a pram body attachment. BUT
now Ive seen the JANE i think it was a slalom pro (?) i love the idea of the laying down pram in the car, it is likely we will take some long journeys perhaps to the swiss alps so hubby can climb during the summer and possibly up to scotland and things and i worry about the time limit on the cradle ones,
im being an over anxious new mother im sure!!! decisions desicions!!! AGH!

Totally agree with Joygirl re arnica tablets (you can get them in Boots homeopathy section, looks like a lip balm but full of tiny little pills). Paper pants and pjs that won't show up bloodstains (ewwww!).

Cellular blankets, hats for baby, mountains of cotton wool and nappy sacks, dettol spray for mattress when you change sheets to stop sicky smell.

Food for you (if bf) - something like biscuits (my mistake) that you can eat straight from the packet at 3am while parked on the sofa, but not fattening! Dried fruits/nuts?
