Hello

I am 23w P, and have a horrid nasty chesty cough which is keeping me awake and making me feel ill. I had bronchitis last year and think this may be the same, but I am wary of taking anti biotics. Does anyone know of a mixture from the pharmacy that will loosen the chest and help me get rid of what is obvioulsy sitting there - sorry to be gross! Someone suggested a mixture beginning with 'R', but i can't remember what she said - any ideas what could work?? many thnaks x

I really would get checked by the doctor I have severe asthma and probably had about 5 chest infections when I was pregnant, if it is bronchitis best to treat it now rather than end up in hospital.

You could try making your own, ive had to this week too- put a cup of hot water in the microwave with half a lemon in it for a minute or so, take out the lemon and wait till its cooled then add however much honey you need to make it bearable to drink.

may taste horrible at first but you soon get used to it and it really does help

urgh sympathy.... exactly the same dates/illness here.

I also have asthma and every cold or illness I get ends up on my chest at some point.

I don't always get it treated tbh, as I get it so often during the winter that it's just not practical to keep taking ABs but I hate it. I also hate that I wee whenever I cough, which is a bloody nightmare, but that's another issue Blush

It's so tiring, isn't it? Steam inhalations often ease it slightly for me, maybe worth a try? But then cough medicines have never done a great deal for me so maybe a slightly different thing.

Lemon and honey worked well last night for a few hours, but i need something at 2am when i can't be bothered to go downstairs. There is a mixture with an 'expectorant' in it, which loosens the gunk on chest so you can cough it up, but I can't remember what it is. Being P i can't remember much - If i find out I will post later. Thank you ax

I ended up in hospital at 5months PG last time with a cough that was so horrendous I had pulled a load of muscles across my back coughing. I cried when i coughed it hurt so much and was unable to stand. I too had been avoiding everything medicinal! When I was transferred to the maternity unit, they gave me a load of cough/cold type drugs to take...and an inhaler. The staff were very clear that on occasion it's better to just make you (the mother)better!

Also, bare in mind, the reason most of these things say not for pregnany women, is not because they are actually damaging to the foetus, but because they have not done the necessary scientific testing to say it definitely doesn't do harm. And let's face it...testing on pregnant women is going to be contentious! :-) So, I'm not saying ignore the advice...but I am saying that you may be prescribed something and it'll be just fine!
