Baby clothes sizes

Hi all

So far we have absolutely TONS of baby clothes. We were lucky enough to be given so much stuff from my friends. However, a friend was saying the other day that baby clothes are always big... So if you've got a 7.5lb baby, generally clothes that say up to 7.5lb will be too big... And we have hardly any smaller clothes, I mean probably not even enough for the hospital alone! Should I invest in some more cheapy sleepsuits in a smaller size? or wait and see if we have a whopper?

I would just wait to be honest, I find baby sizing varies between different shops, so if you have sleepsuits from different places chances are some will fit. Also 'tiny baby' sizes always seem to be much more expensive than newborn. When are you due? Smile

baby wont mind if they are a little too big, but you dont want them swimming in them...

i find that sainsburys sizes are enormous, debenhams are too wide but length is good, m&s are about true to size and now my brain has stopped working so ill leave it there! :)

honestly i wouldnt bother. Sleepsuits that are a little too big are not really a problem. They WILL grow into them and faster than you can beleive. So long as you dont have inches of dangly fabric you will probably be fine.

Also the fit really depends on the brand. For instance Gap sleepsuits though usually gorgeous seem only to be made for very lean babies. My DD, who was described as a "strapping lass" by our HV when she was 10 days old never fitted them properly ever. Sainsburys on the other hand are HUGE and Next, Pumpkin Patch and John Lewis seem to be just right.

It depends on the baby! DD was 8lbs 2oz and we had bought stuff which mostly went up to 10lbs, I think; she was absolutely swimming in the width of them but they were too short very fast as she was very long. We ended up cutting the feet off some of them to have something to put on her.

Wait and see what size and shape yours is before spending unnecessarily.

Wait until baby is born. DD1 was 3.4kg about 7.5lb, so not small, but john lewis new born gros where too big. I sent hubby out to mothercare to buy a pack of tiny baby gros and vests which lasted several weeks.
My sister later used them for DD3 who was nearly 9lbs - not exactly tiny!!!

I would just buy a pack of babygros and vests from the supermarket in newborn size. They are cheap as chips really. But I like to be organised and I don't like my newborn to not have clothes that fit.

I have also found that each shops sizing is different. But also your child might not small or large for its age bracket so that will also have an impact. My DD was 5lb 12oz at birth so needed tiny baby stuff and has generally been about 3-6 months behind her age bracket. Although we coped perfectly well in hospital with newborn sized clothes as didn't have tiny baby stuff until my mum bought it. A lot of my friends found newborn clothes too small for their newborns so only had 0-3 months. Definitely wait until baby is born before you buy/get anything else.
