Tilted womb?

At 12 week scan I was told I have one, but not to worry. Anyone else have one / know what this means?

Does it cause pain?

I have one too. It's a normal variation, I think I was told about 20% of women have one. It makes absolutely no difference to pregnancy, as the uterus grows it'll not matter. Purely anecdotally, I think it may encourage an anterior placenta and a back to back baby, but that couldjust be my bad luck (first 2 babies had anterior placentas and were back to back, this one has a normally placed placenta and is in a good position.)

I have one too.main issue is that ultrasound scans are a bit harder to see (eg at 12weeks) as the womb tilts back.I've not had any other probs though. Hth

Joygirl78 · 27/01/2012 06:32

I had a mmc first time round and they said then I had a tilted womb. It had nothing to do with the miscarriage. For my DD1 it was never mentioned, never an issue. Had normal pregnancy and baby and placenta were all in good positions. Pregnant again now and again no issues at all. Don't think it is even on my notes or even been referred to. In fact until I read this I jad completely forgotten I ever knew it was tilted!

buonasera · 27/01/2012 07:45

I've got one too, so's my mum, but told it doesn't have any effect on anything. I think it's just a sign of a sonographer who pays attention!

blondiep14 · 27/01/2012 07:50

I was told at a smear once that I had one but it's never been mentioned since!
Have had two babies and never came up then. I had to sit on the loo both labours to get them to come down but I don't think that is specific to women who have wombs that tilt!

joosiewoosie · 27/01/2012 07:58

Mine's tilting backwards because I've got a large fibroid making it do so! Fibroid is up high, so shouldn't cause any problems in pregnancy or delivery although I may need a drip after birth to contract the womb quickly so I don't lose too much blood.
I don't think a tipped one in itself is a problem apart from the fact that ultrasounds are more difficult to get clearly.

Zwitterion · 27/01/2012 08:16

I have one, so does my mum. No issues whatsoever with us as far as I know.

feedthegoat · 27/01/2012 08:19

I have one too. As others have said scanning took a little longer trying to see everything but all was straight forwards in pregnancy and labour.

Angel786 · 27/01/2012 19:45

Thanks all, makes sense as I also had back to back dd in labour last time but didn't know I'd had a tilted womb.

I read it can also make sex more painful, which may have something to it...

me too, never had a problem tho

bouncysmiley · 27/01/2012 22:21

I had one and had no problems. I believe they rectify themselves during the pregnancy.

littlemissnormal · 27/01/2012 22:49

I had one and it just meant that my dating scan had to be done internally. As the baby grows it naturally tilts to the 'normal' position. Never caused a problem in pregnancy or birth.

MrsLister · 28/01/2012 00:17

I had a scan today and saw it written on the report that I have a tilted womb. And my mum did too! Wonder if it's passed on from mother to daughter?

browneyesblue · 28/01/2012 00:21

I had one, but last time I had a scan I was told it wasn't tilted anymore. It must have righted itself while I was pregnant with DS. It never caused me any problems.

LanceCorporalBoiledEgg · 28/01/2012 01:45

I have once and it has caused me problems.

For a start smears are more difficult and the nurse often struggles to get it right, so it's more uncomfortable for me.

But secondly and more importantly - I needed a HSG test (test to check my tubes weren't blocked) and I've also had IVF treatment.

Both these required a tube being put into my womb via my cervix, but because of my backward womb the Drs were unable to perform it without 'forcing it' causing me loads of pain / bleeding.

So both times I had to have a general anaesthetic, so 2 unnecessary operations and hospital stays.

But as long as you don't need any fertility tests or treatment you'll be fine! In fact you'll probably be fine anyway, I was under the impression from the Dr that I was a bit of a freak of nature....the consultant said my cervix was like a U bend!

I have one too.

mrslister my sonographer said it is hereditary.

Didn't cause me any problems in first pregnancy and not so far in second (21 weeks)

Angel786 · 28/01/2012 09:51

Thanks all, lance it did take 10 months to conceive dd so not sure if slightly longer duesp to the ticketed womb? Did have a few fertility tests to check for pcos etc. Hope you're ok now?

I have one too Angel and so does my mum. Never had any problems, the only thing I notice is that if I get period cramps they tend to be in my back rather than at the front and when my mum was in labour she felt most of her pain in her back..... My sister and I were both breech presentation but I've no idea if that's related or not.

Am current pregnant with baby no 1 so I'll have to wait and see if I have a similar experience to my mum I guess! It did take me a while to concieve, but again I don't know if the tilted uterus played a part in that or not...

Kveta · 28/01/2012 11:22

I have one, and in both pg have had anterior placenta. No other issues, but dating scans have been done internally both times (1st was just because it was standard to do them internally in the country I was in, 2nd because of retroverted uterus.)

dreamc1 · 28/01/2012 11:33

I have one too. It just made the dating scan a little difficult, had to have an internal scan instead.
No problems otherwise
