37 weeks, never had chicken pox and nursery exposure

Hello,

I am 37 weeks pg with my second. DD goes to nursery and this evening at drop off, one of the mums told me that her DS (due to start nursery this week), didn't because he has chicken pox. Her DD is the same age as mine so they are in the same room.

I have never had chicken pox, and as the baby is breech, I'm expecting to deliver within two or three weeks (c-section). Am I being ridiculous to be worried? Should I tell the hospital? What are the chances of the virus being passed onto the boy's older sister and then to my DD and then me? Is that a ridiculous chain of events to worry about? And they came over for a playdate two weeks ago (I had lots of cuddles of the boy) and his spots came up less than two weeks after the playdate.

Would appreciate any advice.

Thank you

Call your midwife now and have them check your blood for the antibodies. They'll have a sample of it somewhere and it'll take them a couple of hours at most. This happened to me when I was pg with ds, dd caught chicken pox along wiht every single child at nursery and my mum swore blind I'd never had it. As it turned out I did have the antibodies so I was fine. Chances are everyone who hasn't had it will catch it unfortunately, but I think in terms of yourself and the baby you're past the stage where it could cause serious harm. I think I remember reading that some babies are born with chicken pox if the mother is infected in the last few weeks, but tbh you're best to call the midwife (or labour ward if she's not reachable at this time of night) to get the ball rolling. YOu could be worrying about nothing.

No this is not a ridiculous thing to worry about. I would definitely speak to midwife or hospital about it. I know someone who had an 18 month old and was very heavily pregnant with no. 2. The 18 month old caught chicken pox and the mother and newborn had to live separately (ie in a different house) from the DH and the 18 month old for around 3-4 weeks.

I don't have the antibodies - had the blood test at booking. Will call midwife tomorrow. Thanks very much ladies.
