Significant IUGR and no liquor at 28weeks

Help. As title, but with added complication of previously enlarged ventricles in baby's brain. Ventricles are now normal and rest of anatomy looks normal, but baby is tiny and not growing at all. Also learned today that there is no measurable liquid around the baby.

Doctors are being vague about the prognosis - seems to range from the baby dying in utero, through premature birth and breathing difficulties, and a chromosomal abnormality, to a normal delivery of a very small but perfect baby. This last possibility seems to be the least likely in the doctor's mind.

Does anyone have similar experience to share? I'm sick with worry.

I am so sorry I cant help but didn't want your post to go unanswered. You poor thing are they going to deliver early?

mum2JRC · 25/01/2012 20:55

Just saw your post and couldn't leave you.
No experience but I'm sure there will be some mumsnetters that can support you

bushymcbush · 25/01/2012 20:56

They might deliver early, and I might go into premature labour naturally due to lack of fluid. Everything is so uncertain. Have to tell my boss tomorrow I need to take mat leave 5 weeks earlier than planned.

oh love, i wish i could help. dd2 had stopped growing at 31 weeks, which was spotted at 33 weeks (they were also able to establish that the liquid around her had disappeared pretty much overnight) and they jammed the steroids into me and got her out that day. all a bit frightening, of course, but everybody fine.

it does sound like the dates are quite different here though. i don't know what they consider 'significant' iugr as well.

bumpsnowjustplump · 25/01/2012 20:58

Oh bushy I am so sorry. How awful for you to be in limbo.

bushymcbush · 25/01/2012 20:58

Just wish the baby would grow. It's so tiny at the moment and not growing at all Sad

Hi bushy, am really not sure what to say but am here and just wanted to say I care. You must be so worried. Is this your first baby? Can you talk to your consultant?

south345 · 25/01/2012 21:02

My ds2 had iugr and low fluid but some, he made it to 38 weeks before they got him out.

Praying baby grows for you

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 25/01/2012 21:02

they checked the cord etc? do they think that's all working fine?

poppycat04 · 25/01/2012 21:03

When do you next see your doctor?

bushymcbush · 25/01/2012 21:03

Second baby. First was totally uneventful joyful pregnancy, birth at 42 weeks. Had no reason not to expect similar.

OP posts:
mum2JRC · 25/01/2012 21:04

How big do they say your baby is at the moment Bushy?

TCOB · 25/01/2012 21:04

Bushy my love how frightening. I am bumping again because there will be plenty of ladies on here who know how you feel. We just need them to stop whatever they are doing and come over here! In the meantime a hand-hold from one who can't empathise but can just sit quietly with you...

bushymcbush · 25/01/2012 21:04

When was he diagnosed south?

OP posts:
bushymcbush · 25/01/2012 21:05

Cord seems fine. Normal blood flow.

AngeG · 25/01/2012 21:06

I had similar although not the added complication. My DS was small for dates at 28 weeks so they gave me two weekly scans which showed little or no growth and 1 or 2 small pockets of fluid, also did doppler scanning of the blood flow across the cord and did CTG monitoring 3 times a week.

Managed to make it to 34 weeks, when my blood pressure went sky high. I had the two steriod injections to help his lungs. He was only 2lbs 10oz and spent three weeks in NICU, but had no breathing problems. He's 8 now and you'd never believe he was so tiny!

They told me that without any or much fluid a C-secton was the safest way to deliver, rather than induction.

Hope it all works out for you

bushymcbush · 25/01/2012 21:06

Weight estimated at 600g which I think is a bit more than 1lb?

OP posts:
morethemerrier · 25/01/2012 21:10

Thinking of you as well bushy.

Only experience to share is that my DS1 had enlarged ventricles found at 20 week scan, had regular scans every 4 weeks never decreased or increased but had lots of possible outcomes including chromosomal abnormalities, early delivery etc. Was born at term perfectly healthy/normal. Was later suggested at 6 month check up that large measurements are 'normal' for boys.

I truly hope you get some positive news, when are you due to see the consultant again? It must be an unbearable position, my heart goes out to you and your family xxx

bushymcbush · 25/01/2012 21:12

Glad you had a happy ending Ange. They spotted growth had slowed at 26 weeks and now at 28 there has been no further growth at all.

bushymcbush · 25/01/2012 21:13

I am seeing the consultant again in 1 week.

SoozyWoozy · 25/01/2012 21:15

One of the most difficult parts of pregnancy and childbirth is the not knowing... so much of it (from the health carers) is making educated, well informed guesses. The Doctors vague-ness is probably that they don't know 100% themselves so want to give you all possible eventualities. Not the best for a mum who just needs to know why, what and when.

I think your best way forward is to ask them for a clear plan of what they propose to do. Are they going to monitor you / baby? What do they intend to do if the monitoring is unsatisfactory? Are they planning to deliver babe in the current situation? And I'm sure you have many other questions.

I don't have personal experience to share, but I do wish you the very best.

Suzy x

AngeG · 25/01/2012 21:20

Oh bushy, a week is such a long time in this situation, think I'd be asking for the CTG monitoring. Did the consultant say anything about steroid injections?

Thinking of you

ballroomblitz · 25/01/2012 21:34

Mine is a similar story to AngeG. Small for dates at 27 weeks but ds managed to stay in until 34 wks when they found he had lost weight in utero, my placenta had placked in, hardly any fluid and absent doppler. His IUGR was caused by my pre-eclampsia. Immediate cs was given and he was born at 2lb 12 (1025g). He was rushed to NICU but off the CPAP after 12 hours as lungs ok. Steroid injections probably helped.

How is your blood pressure? Is is symetrical or asymetrical IUGR? Are you hospitalised?

I really hope everything works out for you. I remember being absolutely petrified x

WillbeanChariot · 25/01/2012 21:52

Sorry to hear you are going through this Bushy. My DS was diagnosed with IUGR and poor cord flow and was delivered urgently at 27 weeks and 560g. He had a rough ride but he's doing fine. Just wanted to give you a positive story from a tiny one. The docs thought that he had chromosome problems but he didn't.

Are you confident in your hospital? Sounds like you need to understand better what the plan is. Don't worry about your mat leave- I went to see my midwife one day and never went back. Work will be fine and you need to think about your little one now.

I really hope you get some reassurance and better news soon.
