How much savings for a baby?

I am a Waiting to TTC girlie due to my husbands reluctance, his want to get his business up and running and just being plain and simply 'not ready'. Angry

So i am waiting... have been for nearly 2 years and he promised that we could TTC by December this year. Grin

However, last night he started saying- how much savings do we have, will i have enough saved to cover a month unpaid ( i live in Dubai, so only get 2 months paid leave), and cover nursery costs etc.

I calculated that i will have by the time we actually have the baby ( end 2013 all going well).
But my question is- roughly should i have 20k saved or 30k or 40k????? Confused

Any answers would be good so i have a response to my excuse filled husband!

When we were dithering about whether to start ttc someone said to me 'you can never afford a baby', its true! We didn't have any savings, bit of a shock to end up with twins (seriously expensive!), but we've managed. I'll go back to work p/t after 9 months instead of a year. I've found we spend money on different things now - we don't go out so much, once a month instead of twice a week, that easily covers the babies' expenses.

As the others have said it may take a while to actually conceive, I wouldn't use not having savings as a reason to put it off.

My DD is 6 weeks . I've saved 8000 and plan to get that up to at least 10000 by the time DD is 6 months, but that is simply because I want to take a years maternity leave , so need enough to cover the other 6 months. If I was only taking 6 months leave I wouldn't bother saving unless for other items such as a cot etc and you can do that fairly cheaply.

I'm not sure many people save for a baby, and just tend to manage .

THanks for the advice ladies.

I spoke to my DH last night about the costs again, telling him what i had learned and that its not so important to have savings etc.

His response was the same old..... wait until Dec and save like crazy til then, so he obviously didnt listen!

Unless his business really takes off, i will have to go back to work immed, as much as i would like to have time off.

Cant do much but wait til Dec, and try and save til then.

Thanks again!
