Anyone else on Clexane - where to jab?

I'm 26 weeks pregnant and have been taking Clexane since the beginning. I'll be taking it until 36 weeks and then back on it for 6 weeks post-partum. I've been injecting into my tummy and the obstetrician told me that there's no way the needle can pierce the uterus (actually she told DH who was having a moment!!) as even the skinniest people (I ate Christmas so that's not really a concern Grin) have around 6mm of subcutaneous fat.

All was fine until someone else asked me yesterday if the injections could hurt the baby and it kind of set me thinking again. So, wise Mumsnet ladies, did you inject into your abdomens or did you move to thighs? I'm on 40mg by the way and prefer the spring syringes but Boots don't always give me those ones.

I always injected into my belly, but then I could always pinch at least an inch.

I think I would have moved to my thunder thighs if I couldn't get a good lump of belly to jab into though.

you need to inject into a layer of fat as the enoxoparin (clexane) is fat soluable. I have been injecting both this and last pregnancy into my (more than ample) tummy fat. Have never felt the need to move onto thighs or bum. i think the risk is that if you inject into your bum or thigh you will hit muscle rather than fat and the clexane wont be able to disperse through your body the way it needs to.

The injections really cant hurt your baby and are really helping.

mumatron and lynlynnicebutdim, thanks for coming back with such a quick response. I have no problem finding an inch or two so I'll keep doing what I'm doing.

This is my third pregnancy but the first one that's got this far so I'm inclined to worry. You've been very helpful.

It can't hurt (or get directly to) the baby. Here's my patented method:

Buy your favourite ice lolly.
Tuck it, wrapped, into the side of your knickers, around from your hip, v low down on your bump. This is where you have the least nerve endings.
Leave for 5 mins.
Quickly remove lolly, wipe skin with alcohol wipe and jab in clexane.
Eat lolly.

As for Boots not always getting you the spring loaded ones, go to an independent chemist, explain the situation and ask them to source them for you. Boots can do it too but have far less autonomy at branch level. A local independent chemist can do it dead easy and with a repeat (kerching!) prescription like yours, will be happy to.

Good luck!

I had to jab clexane after my c section for a week and made a little fairy ring around my navel.

BagofHolly · 23/01/2012 21:42

Your navel! God almighty that must have murdered! Thank goodness you were only on it a short while! I was on it throughout both pregnancies and 6 weeks post partum each time and some bits are defo more sensitive than others. Underbump is much less sensitive.

Chubfuddler · 23/01/2012 22:22

That's where they told me to do it. It was hideous I must say. Thd anticipation worse than the event.

I could never be a junkie that's for sure.

When I was in hospital after my last delivery I was still injecting myself. One of the midwives told me she was injecting a patient slowly into her upper arm at 45degrees and wondered why the poor girl hit the ceiling each time! So 24 hours post partum, jacked up on morphine, I did a training session!

BagofHolly another top tip, thanks! I actually don't find the injections too bad. Sometimes they hurt more than others but generally they're fine. The funny thing now is that depending on where the baby is lying, I don't think it enjoys the pinching and it kicks :o Since I love feeling movement, that doesn't bother me at all!

Clubfuddler how horrible - I was certainly told below the navel only - that sounds really sore.

Thanks again for all your help. I feel much better now.
