Everywhere i look I see bibs for newborn babies. Do I need to buy any? I don't understand why. I intend to breastfeed the baby so what use will I have for bibs before he starts to be weaned?

I did use a couple of bibs when BFing, you'll be surprised how much they dribble and it can save endless top changes and also their little necks getting sore from being damp. My tip would be to not buy the tie up ones, velcro didn't last as long with the constant washing / drying, I liked the popper ones which did up at the side. And don't buy too many. I still use my muslins - very, very useful when a toddler / child is vomiting!

Thanks - I'll go for minimal supply with poppers then!

Although velcro ones much easier to put on one handed.

I had a few, for sicky dribble as well. But muslin squares are more essential and useful.

Some newborns dribble an awful lot. Some sick up milk - and not just straight after a feed, sometimes hours after. So unless you want to be on standby with a muslin at all times, a bib can be handy.

DD1 didn't seem to dribble much, so we didn't use bibs. DD2 seemed to dribble loads, so I got a load of new bandana style bibs from eBay - although I generally hate the look of bibs, I actually think she looks quite cute in bandana style ones.

But no need to get before the baby is born (unless you really want to)- it's easy to get them if you find you need them after he / she arrives!

There is no real need for them IMHO. And I had a very sicky baby...

I just changed him frequently and used a lot of muslins.

and I think they look horrible

Yes, actually I did use bandana ones for the teething dribbles. Much cuter.

Say no more they are awesome!

Ah yes, those are the ones I have NoGoodAtHousework. They are brill, and I had a really good service from them.

I liked the bandana mum2mum brightly coloured ones. They can look like part of an outfit rather than a bib. They popper up and I had 4 in different colours which was plenty. They are soft towelling and absorb really well preventing sore neck/chin from dribble. There is a similar make called dribble-on which are more like cotton fabric with loads of funky designs. Both makes are cheaper if you buy online.

Friends and family bought me sooo many bibs with DS that I didn't have to buy any for about his first year!

kiki22 · 23/01/2012 21:08

I've got ones that are waterproof on the back for any wee dribbles, Dsis found with her DD that she dribbled milk at times and it would sit in the creases of her neck (she was a cubby little thing)

Asda do a pack of 10 for £3.50 nothing fancy but good for feeds at that price if you don't use them much it's no big deal.

I formula feed and still don't use bibs, muslins are much more absorbent and effective for us. I have bibbles for catching the teething dribble, they're cute.

TinkerMaloo · 24/01/2012 10:10

i never used a bib when breastfeeding...
