Mine came off eBay and is second hand. Will only be using it occasionally and £70 was too much!! Three times through the dishwasher and then a couple of times in the steriliser, surely it will be ok!!

I'd feel a bit eewww about it! Asda are selling Tommee Tippee ones quite cheap at the mo.

OlderNotWiser · 22/01/2012 19:42

Mine was third hand and I sold it on! Sterilise and you have no reason to feel uneasy whatsoever.

Garliccheesechips · 22/01/2012 19:46

Thanks everyone. Sure its only breasts anyways...
Not like it's a second hand penis pump....

Hmm

yikes!! Grin

There's a thread in breast and bottle feeding about this. Depends if it's a closed or open system .

Grumpla · 22/01/2012 19:53

There's another quite long thread on this at the moment but I can't link to it from my phone, thinks it's "unhygienic to buy a second-hand pump" or something similar if you want to search for it.

It's fine if you have a closed system pump (or a manual pump which you can sterilize all the bits of) but there is a possibility of cross-contamination in non-closed systems so worth checking out what type it is you're looking at.

kotuku · 22/01/2012 19:56

have a look at the cost of replacing the parts that come in contact with you/your milk if you feel funny about it.

I was happy to use secondhand pump and parts after sterilising everything.

Garliccheesechips · 22/01/2012 20:24

Great- thanks dietcoke, sorry- I didn't do a proper search.

Ah, I was just coming over to send you over to my thread where lots of lovely people have given me some great advice, but someone beat me to it. I hope we're not bidding against each other on eBay Grin.

If you're looking for a really cheap manual pump, Home Bargains online are selling a whole Tommee Tippee breast pump kit for £20 (+ £3 postage) www.homebargains.co.uk/products/1738-tommee-tippee-closer-to-nature-breast-feeding-kit.aspx
It's fantastic value and contains so much stuff (I love a bargain :) )

I really dom't get this argument about closed systems and mould.
I have a medals swing from first pregnancy. So if there is a chance of mould growing in the closed pump then that is just have likely to have occurred in my own used pump as it is in any second hand one anyway might buy. If we are not advised to buy second hand because of this, then logic would say also not to use an old pump of your own surely. There is nothing in my packaging to say it is risky to use an older pump. This seems simply ridiculous

missingmymarbles · 23/01/2012 07:33

The ones in hospital are sterilised in Milton or some such, between patients, not new ones every time. Sure it will be fine Smile

WillbeanChariot · 23/01/2012 08:53

I bought from ebay for very premature DS, it's fine. I got new tubes and funnel bits. Have since loaned it out to three people. I would buy secondhand.

Mine is a Medela pump in style, it's great.

Garliccheesechips · 24/01/2012 21:03

This is all really great advice, thank you everyone. And the links too. I'm sure by the time I get to DC2 I won't give a hoot!
