I really need to lose a few pounds Blush.

I am 6 weeks pregnant.

I feel horrible.

Can I safely diet over the next 6-8 weeks to lose, say one stone? Or is it totally a bad thing to do?

As long as you eat healthy and take all vitamins needed, you should be fine, but don't crash diet. Walking is good , but don't join the local zumba class or spinning class,
I spoke to trainer at gym who specialises with women who are pregnant, try that if you have local gym

Wasnt planning on crash dieting just cutting back the crap.

Just wanted to check that losing weight wasnt a "bad thing" if you know what I mean.

I'm taking pregnancare which has everything in it.

I was thining weetabix for breakfast, fruit snack, small lunch (soup/sandwich/small jacket pot) and then a proper dinner of meat/fish and veg (no potatoes or rice - carbs are my vice!). No puddings/choc/crisps/biscuits etc.

Are you actually significantly overweight or just feeling a bit podgy? Cutting out biscuits is fine, but you need to still eat plenty of real food. I lost about half a stone in the first trimester for no apparent reason - no morning sickness/no dieting, just carried on as usual.

You can try - as long as you're sensible, however, don't expect too much of yourself. I was about 7lb over my 'best' weight when I got my BFP and planned to do the same, but once the nausea and tiredness and crashing sugar lows of the first trimester kicked in, and the only thing that helped was eating, I just gained another 3-4lb. However, since then, I haven't gained anything other than bump, (I'm now 33+5) and so I'm not expecting too much of a 'car crash' body post pregnancy so just be sensible and kind to yourself and it will all work out.

Not significantly overweight no. Probably 6-8lbs. So yes, feeling a bit podgy :)

I lost some 'accidentally' in the first 6 weeks due to deciding to stop eating like a moron and just cutting out crisps, and various snacky rubbish - if you were eating badly before then that will be enough to lose some (I wasn't even overweight to begin with, just terrible food habits). That said as soon as the nausea and morning sickness kicks in you'll have no chance of exerting such control and will live on what you can (hula hoops for me one week!). I agree with moaningminnie that fine to cut out the junk but keeping in 'real food' really important - so maybe pasta and rice etc shouldn't be cut from evening meal as as much as you're not eating for two, it's certainly not the time to be going hungry; a lot's going on in your body at the moment and you do need the energy imo. Also, carbs defo my vice too and that evening meal suggests screams to me 'will last three days then you'll be running to the chip shop in rebellion' (or maybe that's just me!)

yes, if you cut out the crap and replace with fresh fruit and veg then you'll be improving your diet. Make sure that you drink plenty of water too. I'd recommend avoiding diet soft drinks too because they can affect your blood sugar more when PG.

You need an extra 500cal per day during the last trimester.

I lost almost 2 stone - however, I wouldn't wish hyperemesis on my very worst enemy.

blackcatsdancing · 22/01/2012 16:42

cutting out the crap is fine and a good idea if you replace the rubbish with healthy fruits and vegetables and good carbs . Baby needs lots of good nutrition to grow optimally, as do you to get your placenta in good shape . Your baby is relying on you to feed it every day. You can go for a while on your existing fat stores but its not good for the baby to do that. Vitamins are not a substitute for a healthy diet. Intentionally losing a stone in 6-8 weeks when you don't need to isn't a good idea (sorry but you asked).

Sympathies, milder.

OP, I lost weight through pregnancy sickness, but the embryo/foetus takes what it needs, and your diet sounds ok anyway, compared to mine - I could barely look askance at a piece of crystallised ginger.

Just eat lots of good stuff - don't deny yourself.

My MW told me to lose weight!! Or to not put any on. But actually I have cut out so much crap that I will lose, I'm sure!
