I have been scheduled for a GTT test in a couple of weeks but I have no idea what it will be like. Has anyone here had the test before? Is it awful?

It's not as bad as you think. They will ask you to fast from 10pm the night before. And nothing to drink except water. They should give you an early appt for the following morning. You go in, they take some blood then give you a glucose drink which is like flat lemonade. Then you toddle off and sit in the waiting room for two hours. No moving around and nothing passes your lips except plain water. Then at the end of the two hours they take more bl

...blood and send you on your way. It's boring more than anything.

Hi I had a GTT 3 years ago and basically as above poster said. Fast from night before then drink horrid gloop trying not to throw it up. For me they didnt take full blood tests but 3 sep small tests from my finger tips a bit like a diabetic does but the blood was sort of captured/sucked up in a straw for the want of a better description.

Then it was a mad dash by us all to get to the restaurant as starving pregnant women not a funny sight.

I took my toothbrush and paste and cleaned my teeth after drinking the gloop as I could not stand the sugary stuff - after being overweight all my life I haven't drunk sugary drinks for about 25/30 years so found it difficult to drink the glucose gloop.

Mine wasn't too bad, even though I have a mild phobia of being hungry & had a half-mile walk to get to my appointment - I really dreaded it beforehand but needn't have done so.

Things I found that helped:

  • Having a big, carb-y (low sugar!) dinner the night before
  • Also having a large bowl of porridge just before the 10pm cut-off point
  • Getting the very first appointment they had (in my clinic's case this was 7.30am), though this was more down to chance
  • Kept drinking water in the morning
  • Going to bed late the night before, so that once I'd had the drink I could lie down in their waiting room and snooze quite easily
  • Radio comedy recordings on IPod; I did take books but they were a bit hard work when hungry.

Good luck!!

oh yes - and lots of snacks to eat the second they've taken the last blood test. Flapjack was heaven!

With dd1 the advice was no nuts in pregnancy and I was super conscientious. I took cereal bars to eat afterwards and actually burst into proper big tears when I bit into one like a woman possessed and hit a bloody great hazelnut. I had to spit it out and abandon the bar :( :o
