Toxoplasmosis?

My delightful cat just came in from the garden, looking a bit peaky. Next thing I knew he sat on some papers I was working on and dragged his bottom across them leaving poo all over them.

I threw away the soiled items, and disinfected the places he's been sitting, scrubbed my hands, but now freaking out about contracting toxoplasmosis.

I'm 36 weeks today. Is there any point in getting a test from the gp? I've heard results can take a month? What are the risks at this late stage?

Help!

Very slim(the chances are slim anyway). You took lots of precautions. You'll be fine. Put it from your mind and enjoy your last few weeks.

Have you been tested before to see if you have antibodies to toxoplasmosis? If not, I would ask for a blood test. The result takes as long as other bloods, only a couple of days.
Regardless of today's incident, if you have a cat it's a good idea to know if you have antibodies and if you don't, to get tested for current infection. That's what they do in all other European countries.
The closer you are to your due date the more likely it is that toxo is passed to the baby if you contract it. Although not life threatening, it's much better to treat it before the baby is born.
I hope I haven't scared you. I just think its better to be safe than sorry.
Good luck.

don't panic it is old poo that is the problem. Poo needs to be 24 hours old to mean the toxo cysts are infectious. So you would need to leave your pooey paper for a day and then lick them. Even then infection is unlikely as cats are not as higher risk of toxo as everyone thinks. I should know I am negative for toxo antibodies and have worked with them literally all my life. So don't worry.

OK thanks Samvet that's reassuring! I have heard it's more likely in cats who hunt, and mine has never caught anything. He does go outside though.

Never been tested. Also just read that they usually wait 23 days before doing a test as that's how long it might take for the antibodies to show up, by which point I'll be pretty much at my due date.

I asked the GP ages ago whether I could have a test for toxo as I was getting worried about it, he said they wouldn't do it in this area and not to worry..

Trying not to be an ott pregnant worrier but it's hard isn't it!

you have to wait 23 days to ensure you don't get a false negative ,as like you say it may take that long for antibodies to show. I'm sure you will be fine, you did all the right things!
