Pregnancy advice you don't believe in?

We all know what the current 'rules' on pregnancy are, although some of them are as clear as mud... Just wondering which ones you totally don't believe or understand?

Personally I have continued to enjoy going in the hot tub after swimming and so far, no boiled baby!!

Also don't get why we aren't meant to wear underwired bras... What harm can a wire do?

And don't get me started on the 200mg caffeine limit which our mothers never had to adhere to... Although I am grudgingly doing that one just in case.

Anything else?

OP - I think if you'd picked on the daft things, then this thread would have been fair enough... but you picked a couple of things that really are there for good reason.

Just looked up the hot tub thing - apparantly raising your body temp above 101C can increase the risk of neural tube defects.

From a personal perspective - they;re not exactly the cleanest of things Wink

Thank goodness for that Iwantmyhatback I practically live on the stuff.

I did wear underwired bras tbh, didn't really see the sense in that one. I also didn't really follow the caffeine reccomendations, that seemed to be about it causing the baby to be small as far as I can remember.

I also ate whatever I wanted really, I don't like stinky cheese or pate anyway, no idea of the foods to avoid now but don't think it's that many is it? Mainly uncooked stuff.

IWantMyHatBack do you mean 101F...I think 101C would harm me too!!

not eating whippy icecream...

I know listeria's bad when you're pregnant, but, I've never had listeria from ice cream, I've never even heard of anyone having it from ice cream - surely it can't be that high a risk?

mildertduck · 19/01/2012 20:37

I've just spent the evening doing the mist coat in the nursery. Standing on a chair

IWantMyHatBack · 19/01/2012 20:47

Ha, yes.. 101F Grin

Aw i c where you're coming from Marmite - maybe the way the subject is worded may have rattled a few cages. I am following all advice that has been given to me from my midwife but i think everyone has to admit that some are a bit ... Excessive? Maybe that isn't a great word to use. But i am sure everyone wants to do whats best for their baby and can live without certain things for 9 months! I am missing prawns, runny eggs and smoked salmon the most but resisting temptation for the sake of my baby - however i hav been told if i am happy tht the prawns are fresh and i have cooked them then its fine. And also if you use eggs with the red lion stamp on them they have vaccinated against salmonella so surely a runny egg is fine? Hummous? Really? At this rate we will only be allowed Broccolli!

My nan had it from a whippy ice cream from a van, she was seriously ill with it. Went down to 5 stone and we were expecting her to die. I'm not pregnant and still wouldn't eat one Grin

Hot tub is a very bad idea, particularly in the first trimester, as raised basal temperature is linked with neural tube defects. Like other posters have said, Marmite, I'd take it easy if I were you. A warm bath is fine, and particularly nice in the later stages of pregnancy.

Silly advice I ignore:

  • avoid sushi. I eat it if I'm sure it's freshly made and from a reputable seller (not some dodgy supermarket). IMO its more important to have the iodine in the wakame and the Omega 3 in the fish, which most pregnant women don't get enough of in their diets.
  • avoid soft cheeses. I eat soft cheese that is commercially produced and sold in the supermarket, but not the french stuff from the farmers' market.
  • avoid alcohol altogher. I have a maximum of a small glass a day. Or a shandy. Or a glass of bubbly. All in moderation and all that.
  • sleep on your left side. IMO that's not necessary at all till the third trimester, when you're big.
  • have the baby sleep in the room with you. I put my babies out in the hall, otherwise they snuffle and move about and that means neither I nor DH can sleep. That's just madness for everyone in the family: NOT worth it. They go in the cot from about 8 weeks, when they're on 1-2 wake ups per night.
