Highchairs for newborns? Confused

Hi all

We were idly looking at highchairs the other day, thinking it's something you wouldn't buy until age 6 months, but some of them state they are suitable for newborns.

Just wondering when/how you would use a highchair for a newborn/young babies? Would you have them at the table with you when are eating?

Can you tell this is my first, I don't have any idea what I am doing!

Thanks
Alex

I think the difference is that you can recline newborn ones almost flat. I don't really see the point though personally.

OhFraktiousTree · 18/01/2012 16:30

They recline into a sort of bouncer and you can attach toys. A friend has one and while I was initially Hmm it's been a blessing after her CS as she doesn't need to bend down to put her baby in a Moses basket on the floor etc.

KatAndKit · 18/01/2012 16:32

I don't see why you'd need a high chair? In any case surely the baby can't sit up in it when it is newborn, or is this some special reclining model.
Might be for bottlefeeding the baby, although surely you would just hold it in your arms?
I'm stumped on this one too. Seems utterly pointless to have a chair for a child that isn't going to sit and eat in it. I think you should go with your original plan to get one when you need it!

No idea. Some do recline, lots of people still wean early and need to recline their babies because they can't sit properly. No idea why you would need one for a newborn though! Excuse to con new parents into parting with more cash? Wait 6 months then buy the Ikea one Grin.

KatAndKit · 18/01/2012 16:38

Bloody hell I have just googled this and seen on the Kiddicare website the price of some of these from birth chairs!! WTF? Who is spending that much on a highchair? I'll stick to just going to Ikea and getting a normal one when the MiniKit starts eating food.

We are going to get the newborn attachment for the Stokke Tripp Trapp, mainly to avoid the temptation to pop a bouncer on the table or whatever to have the baby at adult height. I also like the idea of the baby being able to sit at the table with us for family mealtimes even before he's actually eating anything, although we'll see how that goes!

I don't know about a newborn but from about 3 months DC3 hated being stuck on the floor in his bouncer while we all ate dinner. DH and I either had to eat in a tag team or one handed

The3Bears · 18/01/2012 17:32

I didnt put ds in a highchair til he was 5 months old, dont think i'd get one before the babys born myself you have that much to get anyway without a highchair that you wont use for a few months.

louisdog · 18/01/2012 17:44

Thanks for all the replies. I kind of like the idea but also worry it won't get used, so think I'll leave it for now. Maybe I can get one on Ebay or something.

Just looked at the Ikea highchairs, wow, that sounds a great price so I may go for one of those in the end.

We have one - from about 6 weeks my DD was sitting at the table with us at mealtimes (obviously if she was awake) we plan to do the same with my LO who is due next week. We really liked it. We got ours from Kiddicare but because we live nearby to the store, got a substantial reduction in the sale section. We only bought this highchair because it was from newborn and reduced! Otherwise I would have gone for a Tripp Trapp and would now that they do a newborn insert.

Pinkiemum · 18/01/2012 18:51

I have a stokke stool with the new born seat, it is brilliant unless my son is asleep he sits with us at dinner which is much better than him not being able to see us sitting in his bouncer, we can give attention while we eat and if he gets hungry at dinner either my husband or I can give him expressed milk in a bottle,as he cluster feeds most evenings it is a godesend otherwise one of us would have to stop eating to feed him.

Biscuitsandtea · 18/01/2012 19:02

I agree with the other posters. With DS we never bothered with a high chair until we were weaning DS. And for the most part, especially when he was tiny, we only ate when he was asleep anyway.

When we did get him a chair we had a stokke tripp trapp and now we've another due in March we bought one of the newborn seat things that clip on to the top of that so that when we're eating with DS (or even if I'm just sitting with DS while he eats and we're not) if the baby is awake it can see what's going on. Hope it works Confused.

But the newborn stokke chair thing isn't really a high chair in itself - it's really a sort of rocking chair if you use it on the floor and then it just clips on to the top of the seat. So it would be no good once you get to weaning etc anyway.

So, I guess what I'm saying is I wouldn't bother with a high chair yet, especially if this is your first.

We have two Bloom Fresco Loft highchairs and they lie almost flat and were a Godsend when my twins were tiny. They both have reflux and can't be totally flat so this was really handy. I also have a bad back so having them so high up was fab. We use them all the time although now in a conventional chair position. Love them!
