Taking ear plugs to hospital

Wondering whether to pack some in my hospital bag. I'm tempted because the post natal ward was so noisy last time I barely slept and distinctly remember waking up at about 5:30am and counting down the hours til visiting time. But I'm worried that if my baby cries I won't hear her and instead she'll wake up all the other mums on the ward. What are other people doing?

Don't know but having same dilemma as you

I wouldn't personally, I was so exhausted after a 36 hour labour I slept through dd crying despite having no ear plugs and the woman in the bed opposite seemed rather annoyed at having to wake me to tell me Blush still feel horribly guilty about leaving her all alone crying now

Flisspaps · 17/01/2012 21:12

I will have some packed in case I need to go in. I think your own baby will be near enough for you to still hear but the plugs should muffle any noise from further away.

Then it's just the heat, bright lights and bloody uncomfortable bed you need to overcome in order to get some sleep!

I took them in, my babies were in SCBU but I could still hear other babies crying through them, it just softened the noise a bit. I'm pretty sure you'd still hear your baby:)

I took them in but worse them in one ear only!

MyOtherNameIsBetter · 18/01/2012 11:14

(wore them obviously)

notso · 18/01/2012 11:22

I wouldn't bother, they start getting you up about 6 so you only get an extra half hour, and as Flisspaps said there all the other crappy elements to contend with, I would like to add to the list the Mothers loudly popping in and out for a fag between feeds, who's babies scream the minute they leave the ward and who come back in coughing their guts up.

SillyCalamari · 19/01/2012 00:49

make sure you go for the silicone ones if you do, the only ones that work!

BagofHolly · 19/01/2012 12:38

Take them! You will probably hear your baby anyway! Boots Wax Muffles are amazing and the only way I can sleep!

MelanieWiggles · 19/01/2012 16:17

I brought them with me and was v glad of it. I wore them in one ear only the first night and could hear DS but other babies were muffled. He was in the NICU for the rest of my stay so I wore them in both ears after than and got two good nights' sleep.

Bring them with you - you don't have to use them if you don't want to, but you don't want to be kicking yourself that you didn't either !

Take them. I sleep with earplugs every night to try to deaden the sounds of DD snuffling in her basket.

SausageSmuggler · 20/01/2012 21:55

Ah thanks for the suggestions, DH can apparently get them from work so think I will take them. It's not like they take up much space.
