I have a stand from JL that is a rocking base but can also be fixed - best of both perhaps?! Wink

I personally don't fancy making bambino reliant on being rocked to sleep!

Ah, now see this is what I was thinking but my OH thinks it might be a blessing Hmm

Can I just point out that I'm NNEB trained and have 17 years experience, but since I've become pregnant its like I know nothing anymore Grin

Agree with MrsJK - rocking from the start means baby will become reliant on movement to sleep. They are knackered little things when just born and will sleep anyway - so don't encourage a habit which you might come to regret later on!

I bought one like this because I was told it was 'the best' for rocking baby to sleep. What people didn't tell me was that if you're going to do 'feet to foot' then you place the baby at the bottom and it immediately 'pings' up so the baby ends up rather upright!

I'm using a crib this time round Grin DD1 hated her moses so I haven't even bothered getting it out the loft!

You could go with something a little different to either option, a hammock! I used one for DD1 and it was BRILLIANT. So cosy, so natural and very conducive to good baby sleep (because the fabric blocks out the view from the side it's easier for them to 'switch off', IMO). I have a rocking stand that rocks side to side instead of forward to back iykwim, I only used it when lo was unsettled and not to put him to sleep at every sleep time. I liked it have used it for previous 2 ds and will be using it again :)

Rocking is good - I used to tie a muslin to the stand so I could like down and rock it Blush

McPhee your OH is right!! I had a fixed one last time which had been passed down for about 3 generations and my mother had it all re-upholstered and had a mattress specially made so I felt obliged to use it but I spent ages tipping it up and back down and giggling it about so DS would drift back off to sleep. They don't become reliant rocking - it just soothes them and gives you 15 mins more in bed!

My brother bought a rocking one from Mothercare and I was so envious because I was hefting this great big very pretty Moses basket about and he had this lovely light weight rocking cradle! This time I have bought a rocking cradle much to my mother's upset!

I think it's best to get one that can do both. Rocking can be soothing and none of my three have been reliant on it. I think the key is rather than using it to rock them to sleep in the first place you use it to settle them when they have a little in between feed grizzle.
However for DS1 we had just rocking and due to him being quite large and having a big hefty head it used to tip down so I was forever propping the base up with pillows.
