my dr. Says I need to have two B12 injections, has anyone else had to have them? I would rather take vitamins, but she says the injections are the only way. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Hey, I've never had them but I've just studied a bit about it in a Haemotology module. Don't know if you wanted a sciencey answer but here goes....she's probably worried about anaemia (its not just caused by iron deficiency) and will want to rectify it as quickly as poss cos you're preggers. B12 is really important in synthesis of haemoglobin and activation of folate (important in the cell cycle), both of with are vital to proper function of red blood cells. It's carried across the gut by a particular protein called gastric intrinsic factor that can be deficient in some people. I'd imagine she wants to give you an injection of B12 because your levels are low and because you're pregnant she just wants to make sure you get the maximum amount available just in case not all of it gets absorbed by the gut.

Hope that wasn't too scientific, think its a fairly common deficiency, she'll just want to rectify it as soon as poss since you've got a baby on the way.

I have had b12 injections before, they usually put it into the muscle in your arm, it tingles a bit but was fine
