Underactive Thyroid

Sadly I had a mc in sept 2011. We have been ttc ever since. I started recording my BBT Chart in January and I have noticed I have very low temperatures throughout my cycle although I have a regular 28 day cycle. I went to doctors who has sent me for a blood test tomorrow for possible underactive thyroid. I have all the symptoms of feeling the cold and frequent trips to the loo. I am worried that if it is hypothyroidism and they put me on medication they will they ask me to stop ttc, how long will it take for mediaction to work? Can I carry on ttc whilst on medication. I'm 40 I have two children and desperately want another, I don't really have a lot of time on my side. Has anyone else been through this or can advise. Thank you.

I have an underactive thyroid (diagnosed before I got pregnant). It's safe to take thyroxine when pregnant as far as I know. Be aware that the 'normal range' for the blood test is huge. If you're close to the end of the range for low thyroid function, but within normal limits, it may be that your GP won't want to treat you. However, it may be worth asking for a trial of low dose treatment (search british thyroid association online). I had symptoms for years before my GP treated, and in fact ut was when I changed surgery I finally got treatment.

When pregnant, I had to get my thyroid function checkef every 8 weeks as pregnancy can cause changes in thyroid function.

If you do get treatment, speak to your GP as I guess it may be better to put off ttc for a couple of months until your levels are normal (only because pregnancy can reak havoc with your levels).

I'm about 4 months pg and on thyroxine, developed U-A thyroid after having ds. There is no issue at all about taking thyroxine whilst pg, in fact you need to take it to avoid potential problems. I started to feel better after a week on medication, but you might be asked to wait a month or two to get your levels in the right place? I think it would be worth it tbh. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your helpful and supportive responses. I'm feeling less anxious. Best of luck with your pregnancy.
