Anyone used nicotine replacement during pregnancy?

Only got the BFP on saturday so am 4 + 5 weeks just. In an ideal world I would have stopped smoking before falling pregnant but obviously this has been a surprise. I want to stop smoking pronto so tomorrow's the big day. I have tried many times before cold turkey but have never succeeded. The only times I have stopped for any lengths of time has been using NRT in the form of patches.

Reading up on it tonight there still seems to be a lot of associated risks with NRT. I'm not planning on using the patches but maybe the gum very sparingly and try to get off it too as quickly as possible. Anyone else managed to do this? Is it still dangerous to use NRT in the first trimester? I think I will prob kill my dp if I have to go cold turkey.

Hi there. You're doing the right thing trying to give up! I used nicotine gums for a few weeks when I found out I was pregnant. You're right there's no agreement on whether they're a good idea or not but a specialist nurse told me they're still better than having a ciggie provided you dont over do it. That makes sense really, doesn't it? At least you're only taking in nicotine instead of nicotine + other poisons. I did manage to quit completely by 8 weeks and I'm sure you'll be fine too. Hopefully it'll be easier when nausea kicks in and you'll start hating both the gums and the real thing!
Good luck!

Thanks vanilla and well done to you. It's nice to hear of someone who has been through the same thing. I didn't get any nausea with ds so I can't totally bank on having some to put me off :) Yes I suppose nicotine is but one of the thousands of chemicals you get in cigarettes. Looking forward to being off them for a while. The guilt's a shocker when you find out you're pregnant!

Ive just ordered an e-ciggerete to use for a few weeks to help stop completely. Ive had the odd one, but I've been told it's better to have the odd one - use gum/fake gag for a few weeks in order to stop than continue smoking as normal.

I thought it would be a switch going off in my head - pregnant = stop cold turkey. Unfortunately it's not that straightforward. However I'm hoping some insistence and I won't even need the fake fag.

Good luck!

My mum has one of those e-cigarettes. Wonder if they work??

I know voscar some people do find it as easy as that. I know with ds though I didn't and still had a crafty one every so often. When he wasn't growing right (due to pre-eclampsia) it still ran through my head about having those odd ciggies. I've never felt so guilty in my whole life and swore to myself I would never smoke again in any subsequent pregnancies. It's just not worth it.

Thanks. Good luck to you too!!

Just like you, I fell pregnant while still smoking and had to give up straight away. I didn't Sad. It took a few weeks to give up, and throughout my pg I have occasionally broken and had the odd one. However my mw's were very supportive about the fact that it took a little while to cut out that 1 a day, and were also happy with me using NRT when I felt I needed it, though they preferred the idea of using a spray or gum etc than the patch.

Good luck with it! It's difficult but it's worth it!
