Wine replacement !

Just wanted to pass on this link for those of you who are missing your wine. All the wines are de alcoholised so have less than 0.5% alcohol..by my reckoning that means 20-25 glasses are equal to one glass of 'normal' wine!! Ok its not the real thing but some of them are not bad ...I tried the carl jung white which is really quite convincing, the carl jung red isn't bad either ..wasn't keen on some of the more expensive ones though.

Tesco are also doing some ..the brand is 'stutter home' and the name is 'fre' ..I thought the red was horrid but the zinfandel blush was really nice...will try the white today)

Oh dear ..just read this back and I sound a bit desperate ...was missing my wine though

PS I don't normally drink 20-25 glasses of wine...that was just my sums!!

Just to add to that ..I'm now drinking a bottle of becks alcohol free lager. Tesco £3.97 for 6 ...it's very very good..tastes like proper becks..not like Kaliber at all...Yum

I like a wine called Arbor Mist. You can get it in Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys I think. It's got 3 units a bottle, but has a screw cap, so you can have a glass one night, and then one the next.

Hi Laura...is that red or white? Am still trying to find the perfect red wine replacement ...I think the white/rose ones are usually better

I think there was a zinfandel which was a bit like a rose, and a peach flavoured one, which is lovely. Luckily I was never much of a wine drinker!

slinkstah · 18/01/2006 11:34

my consultant told me to drink real wine! 5 glasses a week, as its a relaxant and will relax my uterus- i have alot of contractions!

Debbiethemum · 18/01/2006 11:36

Shall I add my recipie for a 'Pregnant Gin & Tonic'. Pour Gin into a glass swill it round & pour into DH's or whoever is having a normal one, add ice, lime & tonic. It probably still has a trace of Gin but still practically alcohol free and it DOES taste like a real one. The phrase has entered the family dictionary and my mum will have one if she is driving or similar.

AggiePanther · 18/01/2006 11:56

Debbie what an excellent idea ... I love G&T!
Slinkstah ...that's good to hear When I was pregnant with DD (11 years ago) I remember being told to drink guinness ...how things change

Another fellow wine drinker here - and gin!! Sainsbury's do a nice alchol free (or very low) cider if anyone is missing cider!!

AggiePanther · 18/01/2006 12:26

Bugger ...not got a sainsbury's

I wonder ...if you allow yourself a glass of (real)red, but then mix that glass with non alcoholic stuff to make it go further, whether it would taste good...or whether it's better to savour the one glass? Whaddya reckon?

OP posts:
Laura032004 · 18/01/2006 14:22

I would definitely savour the one glass!

Can you cook with it - still get the taste, but no alcohol? I love a really rich beef in red wine casserole

tonton · 18/01/2006 14:32

Relax the uterus? That's all the excuse I need!! A glass of wine in front of the new series of Desperate Housewives tonight...heaven!!

Aloha · 18/01/2006 14:34

I did that with the G&T!

AggiePanther · 18/01/2006 14:52

Did what with the G&T? Savour it? Water it down? or relax your uterus?

See Debbiethemum's post.

Another wine lover here, currently drinking Eisberg alcohol-free wine. It takes some getting used to but it's not bad, and makes me feel somehow less 'excluded' when everyone else has got something nice in their glass. Boy am I looking forward to a really large glass of expensive red when dd arrives in April!

AggiePanther · 18/01/2006 19:36

pacinofan, the wines I mentioned are definitely better than eisberg ..but then nothing beats a good shiraz imo

Am having a 'pregnant g&t' as we speak ...not bad at all

Enid · 18/01/2006 19:42

am having a glass of real red tonight

have had one glass four times a week

something that yummy can't be bad for you

Enid · 18/01/2006 19:43

didnt touch the stuff for 17 weeks

having been having regular glasses since about 21 weeks

AggiePanther · 18/01/2006 19:45

May well do the same myself tomorrow Enid ...moderation is the key I reckon

OP posts:
Enid · 18/01/2006 19:45

agree about the becks though

it is pretty good

AggiePanther · 19/01/2006 20:51

Just tried the 'stutter home' fre white from tesco and its ok i suppose but a bit sweet ...I think I'd definitely only recommend the rose from that range.

When I was expected my DS I asked my GP about drinking alcohol and he said, "well, are you planning on going out and getting p*ssed?" I said no and he said well a couple of small glasses of wine a night won't do any harm. What a nice GP !

scotlou · 20/01/2006 16:55

When I was having fertility treatment, the consultant used to tell women who had a positive preg test to go and get drunk as alcohol wouldn't do any harm - amazing how advice changes in only 6 years!

SandyR · 20/01/2006 17:03

I definitely got drunk at least twice before I found out I was pregnant and my DS is perfect.

AggiePanther · 22/01/2006 12:41

I reckon that unless they were trying to conceive, a huge proportion of mums will have been drunk before they knew they were pregnant....I get a bit confused as to how midwives/gps etc will be really reassuring about this and say 'I'm sure it has done no harm' but then say that alcohol should be totally avoided during pregnancy?
I can understand regular heavy drinking being a problem, but a couple of glasses of red every now and then?
Does anybody know what they recommend in france or spain or other places where drinking wine is even more popular than here?
