possibly ate undercooked gammon..25+5 days pregnant

Ok so been out for a carvery for our usual sundays, we had gammon, my dad and partner had some and said it tasted fine, they really enjoyed it, yet I'm more sceptical, my 2and a half year old DS ate it to. Anyway I'm 26weeks pregnant and really worrying about it, it tasted undercooked to me, it was very 'wet' sloppy, unbelievably moist. And chewy. Didn't taste right at all. I'm really worrying as whether it was cooked, clearly boiled, I usually have it roasted.but I have ate boiled gammon before and I have never seen it like that. I can't stop worrying now

If it was going to make you sick, I think the symptoms should start quite quickly.

What time did you have it?

You will be fine. I worried so much during my first pregnancy about Things You Should Not Eat, including an awful episode when my dear Mother in law gave me Something Very Scary . . .

However, the risks, even if you eat something awful are minimal. Your immune system is suppressed, and you are more likely to get a bug as a result, but your body filters out anything awful before it gets to baby. It's wise to follow advice about what or what not to eat, but babies, even in utero are far far more resilient than we are led to believe, and can survive you eating the most unusual things, honest.

Ate it about 2 o'clock. Just mainly wondering if I'm going to get food poisening, and then the affect on baby.

I have no idea about this particular meal but it is worth bearing in mind that people's taste buds can change quite dramatically during pregnancy. As your partner, dad & son ate it and enjoyed it, it's possible that this could be the reason. I love love love red wine but even a sip of it lately tastes like pure iron to me. And don't get me started on mackerel!!

However, if concerned and feel any symptoms, or your family have any symptoms, don't mess about & see your GP/MW straight away.

Thankyou, it just tasted very very moist. I love gammon, have it all the time. Never had it like that though, soggy.

I would think it would be ok.

Food needs to be kept a high temp when being served at places like that & regular checks should be done.

If you & DS are fine now, no nausea or anything then it'll be ok.

I think my worrying is causing nausea, and the pregnant fact. I am a major worryier with undercooked foods as it is.

How is DS? Is he ok? If he's not feeling ill, then it's probably just nerves.

Is it a place that you've been to before? You're more likely to be able to trust somewhere you've had no problems with in the past.

If you are worried about what you are eating, then stop after the first few mouthfuls. Don't clear your plate.

You will probably be fine. If you (or someone who was eating with you) develop diarrhea or fever within the next few days or weeks, then talk to your midwife.

By the way, I live in Switzerland, and my doctor reassured me the other day that Toxoplasmosis is not normally transmitted through pork's meat. I don't want to contradict any advise on the NHS, but certainly, you are less likely to get it than eating undercooked chicken.

actually pork is one of the worst meats for toxoplasmosis, poultry far less so.
i used to work in catering, we had to probe all the meat to make sure it reached the correct internal temperature- i didnt work anywhere fancy that did rare steaks so not sure how they navigate the rules. I would think if it was a carvery it was very highly likely that they probed it and it was cooked through. They have to keep records for legal purposes. Please don't worry!

also just to add. Most food poisoning has no affect on the baby. The exceptions i know about are listeriosis which can be so serious you miscarry- an extremely rare form of food poisoning to get and Toxoplamosis (more common but still rare) which can pass onto the baby with serious results. You won't get listeria from gammon and i am pretty certain that gammon you ate would have been cooked through as i said above, therefore no risk for Toxoplasmosis. Any other forms of food poisoning will be unpleasant for you but should have no affect on baby so again, please don't worry!
