Pregnant in Mid Wales

Having recently moved to just outside Aberystwyth, I was hoping to attend some pre-natal classes/events (Aquanatal, Baby Yoga etc) in the hope of meeting some lovely pregnant ladies. Trouble is, I can't find ANYTHING, I understand it's not the busiest area babywise, but I'm willing to travel and can make it at any time throughout the week.

Currently the only people I see on a day to day basis are my husband and big burly Welsh farmers who seem to enjoy comparing me to a pregnant ewe.

If anyone knows of anything at all in my, or surrounding areas, please please could you let me know.

You could try asking on mumsnet local, there's a pretty active group for aber.

Welsh farmers - don't you just love them?! I grew up on a farm in Wales; my dad was a farmer and now two of my brothers are, so I know where you are coming from!

I second trying Mumsnet local, and have you tried your asking at your local surgery? Health visitors often know of local groups/classes. Or the library? Local branch of the NCT? Leisure centre?

I don't think there is anything - at least there wasn't when I was pg this time last year apart from a 1 day Parenting course at the hospital which I declined as this was DC2.

There is a branch of NCT in Aber I think but I didn't pursue that avenue tbh. There aren't any specific aquanatal classes and I've found the public swimming sessions at Plascrug to be a bit restrictive as they are closed morning and afternoon for school parties so only really open first thing in the morning or for an hour lunchtime then later on in the evening. The pool at the university sports centre might be a better bet - you have to pay a membership fee but the opening hours are more convenient.

Post natally there is a mums and baby weekly excercise class at the leisure centre which I've been going to for a few months and there's baby/toddler swimming session on a Monday afternoon and Friday morning.

I'd second asking at your local surgery/community MW - my surgery has a noticeboard full of stuff but can't remember if I've seen any yoga classes advertised. PM me if I can be of any help. I'm not in Aber itself either - far more out in the sticks but I had a really pleasant birth at Bronglais despite my fears that it was such a small hospital compared to where I had my first.

There are pregnancy yoga workshops in Machynlleth on a Saturday morning, info here, scroll down to the bottom, and there's a phone number to call: www.yogaibawb.org.uk/classes.php
There are also Aqua Natal classes in Aberaeron swimming pool every Friday between 1225-1300, info here www.aberaeronswimmingpool.co.uk/ Hope this helps!

Sorry, that should be 1215 - 1300.

Thank you all SO much.

Elwen, your message has really made my day, thank you - I'm going to join both!

Mejon, It's great to hear such a positive review of Bronglais - it is such a tiny hospital and apparently with only a birth every 3 days, I was a little nervy - will definitely be looking into the leisure centre once the baby is born :)

Ooh and SoFarWeAreEqual My husband came out with a cracker yesterday when I said I'd have to stop working and go for a little lie down
"Really? Moss (one of our border collie bitches) managed to jump a six foot fence the day she gave birth - and she had 9 pups"

Farmers eh? Wink
