I am living in Egypt and I feel like they want to scan me every time I see the dr, she says they need to check on the baby.
With my first, I had one scan at 16 weeks and there was no need to have another.
What is normal? I turned 40 in October but am not classified high risk.
Thx.

I'm in France and I get an internal scan every month. I'm 22+5. Only all the photos three times through the pregnancy though. I find it all very reassuring tbh.

Here in Dubai they scan every hospital visit instead of using Doppler. Also had a few extra scans due to early bleeding and suspected band syndrome. I am currently 35 weeks and have had about 14 scan thus far...

I think the norm in the UK is 12 weeks (when they do the nuchal fold measurements), 20 weeks (Abnormality scan), and then if there are any concerns about growth, another at 28 weeks. Hopefully a UK-ite will be along to confirm.

I'm in HK and get scanned really quickly ( a 1 min scan)every time I see my obstetrician (so around every 4-5 weeks at the moment and then every two in the last trimester). Then there are 3 longer official scans with the ultrasound technician at 12, 20 and 28 weeks (same as the UK).

I think if you have Obstetrician led care, then there is more scanning as they have the equipment sitting right there in their office, so why fiddle around with the doppler? My friend went private in the UK and got scanned at every appointment too.

I had my DD in Oman. Initially I was being cared for at a private hospital. I had a scan on each visit.
When I was sent to the public hospital, I was given one at 28 weeks to check for anomolies. Pointless really since termination is not available.
I think private hospitals feel the need to justify the cost. A scan is a tangible thing.

Here in the uk - 12 weeks and 20 weeks uness reason to scan again (eg placenta previa).

My midwife suggested avoiding non-essential scans as the scanning itself creates heat and is therefore not necessarily a good thing. I havent read anything about the pros/cons of scanning regularly, and i dont know how doppler use varies from scans either...would love to hear from someone more knowledgable.

Was she suggesting you would be microwaving your baby stuff? Lol!

I've had approx seven scans this pregnancy (had low lying placenta and also had some private scans as we don't get nuchal scans on nhs here, plus had some probls in the past).

When I researched all I could find was stuff saying it's not harmful.

patsdeadfrank · 15/01/2012 11:19

uk here i have had four this pregnancy but its usually 2 one at 12 and one at 20.

Alligatorpie · 16/01/2012 04:11

Ok, I think she is scanning me instead of using a Doppler. Makes sense now. Cheers!

Hi,

UK it's 12 weeks and 20 weeks as standard and then if needed a 28 weeks scan (have mine next month) xx
