I am 29 weeks pregnant with our 4th child. My first and second where good weights, 7lb 11oz and 7lb 12oz. My third was 6lb 12oz even though i was told i was having a huge baby! Anyway, due to third baby being smaller they want to monitor me, which i;m fine with obv want to make sure everything is ok with the little fellow.

I;ve had normal scans at 14 weeks, 21 weeks then one yesterday which was a growth scan which shows him to be 2lb 13oz but, they are saying he is still small but every where i have looked, on the net says a baby at 29weeks should be around 2 1/2lb so i;m a little confused, it also says that babies normally treble in weight before they are born. ( didn't do any research until we got back from the hospital as my cmw had said the baby was a good size)

My consultant now wants me to go for another scan at 32 weeks then 35 weeks.

I;ve also looked at the growth/height chart the hospital have done, for the previous children, which they are know plotting 4th baby on but, surely its all guess work? I;m not in the same county as i was when i had the other 3, so the only info they have, is what i have told them. Also, when i was 36 weeks pregnant with my 3rd i had a weight scan which showed him to be 7lb but was 6lb 12oz 4 weeks later when he arrived. I've looked at the growth chart and according to their graph my 3rd was 6lb 9oz at 36 weeks???????

Really starting to annoy me know. I;m obv worried, as i;m having a home birth and i know if 4th baby is small this won't happen, and obv only want whats best. But am i being unreseaonable feeling this way?

I;ve got a cmw app in 2 weeks time so will discuss this with her, just feel like the hospital are scaring me for no reason.

nicky I'm kinda with you in that I think it's all a bit of guesswork, but an educated guess IYSWIM. The weight in itself doesn't seem to be an issue from what you've said, BUT if LO drops into a different centile group on the chart, that might be what's caused them to flag it up as an issue and just want to check all is ok. Def, talk to CMW, or give the hospital a ring - you have the right to know what's going on, give them a ring and ask about it. You stressing about it isn't going to help you or baby.

sorry what does IYSWIM mean? at the mo he is in between my youngest and my oldest. I think the trouble is i want a homebirth and the hospital had told me i couldn't because i;m obese. I am overweight but have lost a stone since conceiving and haven't put any weight on at all. Know they don't know i;ve lost weight because since my first appointment they haven't weighed me but my cmw has and she is fine with me having a home birth. Just wanted to speak to other moms to be just to make sure i;m not over reacting. Just feel the hospital are being awkward every step of the way x

IFSWIM - If you see what I mean.

I don't really have an advice, but I am also in a different country from where I had my first...it is frustrating. I go between not having enough I info and feeling like they are scaring me for no reason.

I hope you get some answers fom the mw, ad the home birth that you want.

thanks alligatorpie. I;m still new to forums lol. I agree. I wasn't seen until 10 weeks preg so didn't have my first scan until 14 weeks so missed my first lot of bloods. Know i can't seem to keep away from them. Oh well as long a baby is fine i;ll go every day x

yes they are being awkward, they are looking for problems, you said it was ok for them to look for problems, so they will see things that aren't there look very very hard for them.

If it were me, I would just go with MW palpitations & measuring tape to monitor bump growth and not go for frequent scans unless MW came up with concerns. Because it is too easy for them to see a potential but non-existent problem. Especially when comparing one set of measurements with the next. The errors in estimating size from late scans are notoriously large.

And crikey, 6lb 12oz is not that small, my DS1 was less than that (39 weeks gestation, had been predicted at 9lbs+, too) and nobody ever commented on him being too small.

nickymills · 14/01/2012 09:55

thanks ladies. I didn't think he was very small but because the other 2 where bigger they wanted to 'monitor' me. My cmw has said to go along with what the hospital want as it helps her fight my corner concerning a home birth. I;ve got a risk assessment at 36 weeks so i;ll have had another 2 scans by then! And they wonder why there isn't any money in the country. Oh well
