Ok, this is a light hearted thread! I'll start....

Today I had half a glass of Pinot noir (which I was hoping to wait till 12 weeks to do!) and a maki roll...

Anyone else?

I found out yesterday that I am not only pregnant, but approx 22 weeks pregnant....my bad list includes giving blood, using a power plate, eating loads of cheese and nuts and rare beef, drinking lots of wine and Xmas cocktails, going hell for leather in the gym and taking no folic acid or vitamins....feeling bad but holding onto the fact that baked beans have folic acid in to make up for my negligence!!!! Wink

little miss wow! How did you find out you were pg? Congrats!

Last time around I had x rays before I knew I was pg ( on my abdomen! ) but touch wood so far so good!

My bellybutton popped out! I went Ro the docs as thought it was a hernia (well that's what google told me!) and he agreed but asked me to do a test to be on the safe side. I'm 30 and have 2 children already, both of which I 'knew' I was pregnant with at 6 weeks so was quite unaware!
Suppose I've been quite lucky in that no tiredness, sickness etc like first 2 times around!

There are quite a lot of 'sins' on this thread that are actually not sins.

Nuts are fine as long as you don't have allergies in your family, steak is fine any colour as long as the outside has been well cooked, stilton is fine as it's a hard not a soft cheese.

Just so you all know :) - I think a lot of advice changed recently.

MrsCog - thought stilton was an issue due to the mould in it? Not that it's a massive issue anyway - the risk of contracting anything from it is as microscopic as the bacteria - but I thought that's what it was, anyway (in which case, it's just the blue stilton we're not supposed to have).

Thank you ladies for not immediately about the smoking thing Thanks Giving up has been hard - I actually have dreams where I can smoke again, it's quite scary! Not planning to restart when Tiny Hippie makes an appearance either, as I'm hoping to breastfeed, so I suppose I've given up for good :( Glad I'm not into energy drinks as well - I can see how those can be ridiculously addictive, not just physically but psychologically - so well done for cutting down/giving up on those!

Danish blue cheese over xmas.. but my DH made me throw most of it away, plus brie and port salut.. all with labels saying 'not advised for pregnant women'.. a few glasses of vino at xmas.. oh and going for a champagne afternoon tea tomorrow. We still have a whole camembert in the fridge... does anyone know if its safe if you bake it?

Can you really eat stilton? I thought it was the bacteria causing the blue veins that made it anti-baby?? I LOVE stilton - someone say yes!

Actually your right I think the port salut was ok.. i've heard stilton is alright as its made with pasturised milk.. off to bake me a camembert lol

sorry but that's incorrect. Undercooked beef carries a (rare) risk of transmitting toxoplasmosis to pregnant woman who are not immune (that's probably 50-70% of us). NHS guidance contradicts itself and the foods to avoid page for pregnant women is misleading. Whole cuts of meat need sealing on the outside to reduce risk of food poisoning from salmonella, e.coli and so on. Parasites are present throughout infected meat so cooking the outside only does nothing to kill them. That said beef seems to be a lower risk than lamb, game or pork and if the meat has been frozen for long enough before then that will have killed off the parasite's cysts.

Causes of toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasmosis infection is caused by a parasite called toxoplasma gondii. This parasite can be found in:

* undercooked or raw meat
* raw cured meat, such as salami or parma ham
* unpasteurised goats? milk
* cat faeces
* soil or cat litter contaminated with infected cat faeces

Sheep can also carry the toxoplasma parasite.
