for feeling like this?

Am 31 weeks with DC2.

Saw the MW yesterday, who I'd never met before as she was covering. She listened in on the fetal heart and said, "Oh, have you found out you are having a boy? As is sounds like one...".

I feel so dreadful for typing this, but I have come away feeling a little flat. DC1 is a boy and if I am being really honest I was sort of hoping for a girl. We will not be having anymore after this one and although I know it's something you cannot control, I just preferred being totally in the dark about the sex.

Tell me to get over it please!

how on earth can she tell from the heartbeat?? Confused

you are still totally in the dark, don't worry Grin

oh and get over the boy/girl thing - you are having a BABY! He/she will be gorgeous Smile

patsdeadfrank · 12/01/2012 07:53

how the f can you tell from a heart beat?

wonkylegs · 12/01/2012 07:53

Let me clarify ... She said ' it sounds like a boy'
If so then it sounds like an old wives tale and you 'know' nothing more than you did prior to the appointment it still has every chance of being either.
I'm also sure that when you see the face of that little baby when it emerges you won't give a monkeys that it's a girl or a boy you'll just love it because it's yours and your main concern will be that it's happy and healthy not it's gender.
It's hard when pregnant not to overanalyse and worry about stuff but I'd stop thinking about this one if I were you as it's really out of your hands
Congratulations btw

Cheeseandbiscuits · 12/01/2012 07:54

FFs of course she can't hear if it's a boy or girl.

Either way you are going to have a baby, it really shouldn't matter that much

Thank you all, just the kick I needed! Grin

It's a myth apparently if Heartbeat is over 140 its a girl if under it's a boy, but that only works in the late stages of labour so there isn't really a point.
helpful graph

When I was pregnant with ds everytime I saw my midwife and she checked the heartbeat she always asked 'is it a girl', when id say no she would always say 'are you sure?'. I knew ds was a boy as id had a 4d scan so you cannot tell from a heartbeat so just wait and see, either way having 2 boys would be lovely so dont be down about it. :)

Grin how utterly bonkers.
I had a medical student telling me one of my twins was in distress and I needed a CS immediately.
I am fortunate that I know I was having just the one and recognised my heartbeat as well as DDs.

kreecher that is HILARIOUS! You must have initially been like, wtf?! How stupid must he/she have felt after that... Even I (non medically trained) can get spot difference between my own HB and baby's on the doppler pretty much straight away!

Wordweaver · 12/01/2012 16:54

Midnight, I agree with everyone else. I am 30 weeks pregnant and so far the baby's heartbeat at different m/w appointments has been 162, 156, 124 and 144. It can also change depending on the time of day, what you've been doing, eating etc. I'd say she was talking nonsense.

I think the young man in question had never examined a woman before. I was living in Oman where ladies keep their bodies covered. I am convinced I had more ante natal appts than necessary so the medical students could examine my bump.
