So just had a phone call from midwife and said she would have to meet with me so I agreed, she said 26th I asked if there was another day as i have something planned that day and she just said no! I was a bit confused so just asked the time and will have to go as need to have a scan as I dont know how many weeks I am, then she said okay can you meet me at a childrens centre I have never heard of and isnt even near my gp's.
Ive never heard of this before I thought midwifes come to your house for your booking appt?
I'm going to have to go but Im really supprised when I had ds 5 years ago a midwife came to my house for my booking appt and was so lovely and reassuring, now I feel nervous and have to make arrangements for someone to drop my ds of at school as the only time shes available is 8.45, might just be pregnancy hormones but feel upset now and annoyed dreading meeting this midwife :(

sounds a bit odd that she wouldn't let you change the date but the rest sound right, i had my booking in at a children's centre

When I had DC3 I found that appointments, especially booking in was a lot more restricted and it is because of increased demand. After the birth I had NO appointments at home, I had to go into the doctors surgery as they didn't have time.

It is normal now to have appointments in children's centres, which IMO is a good thing because they make you cups of tea and there are decent places for toddlers to play whilst waiting with you.

I've had my booking in at the house only Monday. Then after its at the children centre. Previously I've had to go 2 god to see her but she has said its all changing. Blame the hormones for being upset :) . I think due to all the cuts and that they are trying to change the way they do things. Hope some one comes along and is able to give more advice. They did tell me I couldn't change appointments even tho I had to pick dd up between the times she said.

Meant to say had to go to gps I blame my phone lol

All my midwife appointments were at a local children's centre or the hospital. I didn't see a midwife at home until after DD had been born.

Flisspaps · 11/01/2012 17:00

Our booking-in appointments take place at the local Maternity Unit, and then my antenatal appointments have been a mix of seeing the MWs at the GP surgery, the local Childrens Centre and at home.

Where your appointments take place might vary depending on the day (my MW is at the GP surgery on a Monday for example, but the room isn't available on a Thursday so she is at the Children's Centre) or a change in policy since your DS was born (they might now see everyone at the centre in order to try and fit more booking-in appointments into the day as the MW doesn't lose time travelling between houses)

himynameisfred · 11/01/2012 22:44

yes, my last midwife did appointments from the childrens' centre, sounds like she's busy.
Absolutely you can have appointments that fit in with you, she's trying her luck on getting your to work around her.
If you're doing something important just stand up for yourself to have the date changed x

The flexibility of appointment seems odd. But where I live mw work out of earth centres/gps and surestart children centres

hairytaleofnewyork · 12/01/2012 10:07

Perfectly normal. Midwife appointments here are in Tuesday afternoons at the Gp surgery - I've had two at the mw led centre as the surgery was booked up this week and as for booking in there was a long waiting list at Gp surgery - but here the mw doesn't come to the house.

Mikocat · 12/01/2012 12:09

MW coming to the house sounds like an impossible dream to me! My appointments have always been on a Wednesday afternoon, at the GP's surgery. They are also always stupidly slap-bang in the middle of the afternoon at a time really inconvenient for work, but I just take what I'm offered because they are so busy that it's that or wait another week.

minitoot · 12/01/2012 12:18

my mw wanted to come to the house, but I didn't want her to for various reasons - she asked why but there was no problem in changing the appointment to a children's centre. I have also changed dates of appointments and it wasn't a problem.

JeanBodel · 12/01/2012 12:22

Where I live you always go to the doctor's surgery to meet your midwife for your booking in appointment. I have never heard of them doing it as a home visit.

Fishandjam · 12/01/2012 12:59

The midwives round here (in darkest rural Cambridgeshire) always do the booking-in appointment at your home - though subsequent appointments are at the GP's surgery. (My GP told me that the reason for visiting your house is so that they can see if you're likely to require a visit from Social Services/child protection need extra assistance after the birth!)

The3Bears · 12/01/2012 16:13

It just seemed odd as when I was pregnant with ds I had my booking appt at home, but now its obviously changed.
Just hope all my appts are not at the childrens centre as it isnt near to me at all and I dont drive, will just mention it when I see her.
