Should I just stick to talking to my doula about prenantal stuff and have one to ones with her? Should I let midwives at my hospital where giving birth in March 2012 that i have not been to or booked prenantal classes.

This is all new to me as first baby.

Upto you if you feel happy, I only went to one with my first and didn't bother with my second.

If you have a doula she will be experienced but is she happy talking you through things? Do you have any friends with babies?

biyboo · 09/01/2012 07:08

Doula is really supportive and I do know a few girls who have babies/toddlers.

Why did you choose one class and what did you learn from that and was your hospital helpful in prenantal issues, thanks.

I didn't learn anything and disnt like the format of thr classes that's why I only went to one class! But I've been looking after children since being a teenager so didn't need to learn how to put nappies on etc. the midwifes at the hospital should support you anyway and tell you how to breathe etc but maybe look into that if you don't get into classes.

the nhs antental classes arnt bad! mine finished mid feb I had my dd in late feb so tgey arnt very early but talk to your cummunity midwife xx

I didn't go to any classes until 37 weeks (eek!) as we were moving and I didn't want to have any until we were in our new place (move took longer than expected). My midwife was a bit 'oops, oh dear' about it which made me feel like I hadn't done my homework :-) but actually all it meant was that I'm potentially going to miss the last of three classes (first was last week and second is tour of the hospital, this week). If I'm very overdue I'll probably make the 3rd one anyway! the others in my class are all due in Feb but I think it would still be good to keep in touch if we do get on with anyone, so it's still a chance to meet people.
The class I went to, I thought was useful although I did know quite a bit of the labour stuff having genned up online and in books/close questioning of my mum and sisters (my OH didn't though, so it was quite informative/terrifying for him). The midwife leading it was really nice which was reassuring as she's one of a small number who may be on duty come D-day. I think the tour of the hospital will be the most useful as it will help us both get our heads around what's going to happen (as much as is possible anyway).
Good luck with it all and I hope you have a fantastic birth!

I'm 34+1 and not had any either. Luckily got some dates through the post last week but god they are cutting it fine! I will be 36 weeks when I go so fingers crossed baby is late!

Do you have the nhs pregnancy book? There is a lot of info in there and my mw just advised me to read that as I am unable to attend classes. If you don't have it just google nhs pregnancy book and you can download it from the department of health website.

Flisspaps · 09/01/2012 09:38

I attended no classes when I was pregnant with DD and so far have managed to get her to 22mo with no major breakdowns.

I haven't bothered attending any this time round either. I'm not sure what the point of them is, seeing as every bit of information you could ever want or need is available on the internet. Most of the comments I've seen regarding antenatal classes say how useless they were in the end anyway.

Classes ate usually taken late in pregnancy. Mine were during the 8th month. Our teacher said this was so that a) we would remember what we learned and b) that it was likely that during the later months we would be more concerned about the pertinent infornation. Stages of labour for example rather than what colour to paint the babies room

MiauMau · 09/01/2012 10:24

I'm 34+6 and didn't attend nor am I thinking of attending classes. They're on too early for me and DP to get there on time, we both work at the same studio and it is easy enough for me to go but, without DP there's no point to them. I have dealt with small babies before, have read plenty books and on the internet (mumsnet has been invaluable, thanks ladies :)), we also went to a birthing workshop and used my little 2 month old niece as guinea pig for DP to practice over the Christmas holidays as he had never handled a baby.

Sandra2011 · 09/01/2012 10:25

I didn't have any for my 1st pregnancy as everything was cancelled because of the swine flu.

I didn't feel like I missed out of something. I still managed to push my baby out :)

All I remember from the NHS classes I took before having DS is being horribly uncomfortable on hard plastic chair listening to a boring midwife being patronising and telling me things I already knew. Total waste of time.
