I have posted on here before about my current situation with DP...

He will be back home the day before i'm due to give birth. So we really dont want him to miss the labour..

My question is..

With my first baby, I started raspberry leaf tea at 35weeks, lots of long walks, gym ball to help my hips etc things to help labour (or so i thought) as i did have a very quick labour, and would like to have another quick labour.. DD was 5 days over but once she started, she came within 2 hours or so.

Now do I repeat this in the hope that baby does roughly the same and doesnt arrive too early before he's coming home, or do i leave it to nature?

I dont want to risk not doing any, and have an even rougher time and him still not make it.

help!

I did pretty much exactly the same as you, dd went five days over, then she arrived in 3 1/3 hours! Very similar Smile

tbh, how much the raspberry leaf etc helped is impossible to know. I think it probably has more effect on the speed of labour than when labour starts though.

I suppose your midwife will probably be able to advise you.

Yeah definitely will ask her lots of questions at my 28week check. I just dont want him to miss it, and also.. after I had her I had a slight PPH of 1000mls, so that wasn't pleasant, and wouldn't want to face that without him as he makes me feel so safe

None of these things will do you or the baby any harm, so it won't hurt for you to give them a go.

If you're going to go into labour before he comes home, then you're going to go into labour before he comes home - the beginning of spontaneous labour is a hormonal exchange between you and your baby. Doing or not doing these things won't stop that happening OR make it happen.

:)

TheLittleFriend · 07/01/2012 20:56

Are your sure your not me? I had a pph of nearly 1000ml too. I think that can happen with a quick labour, which is why I'm nervous about making it to hospital. I want to leave the house after the first contraction!

Flisspaps · 07/01/2012 20:58

RLT has no effect on when labour begins, it is thought to tone the uterine muscles. However after taking it myself for the last few weeks of my first pregnancy and still ending up with 17 hours on a synto drip and an atonic uterus by the end, I am very sceptical.

Taking long walks and bouncing on your gym ball won't have any effect on when you go into labour either - I did all of the things you talk about, and was induced at 42+1.

A PPH of 1000mls is actually considered to be a major PPH rather than a slight one!

Flisspaps · 07/01/2012 21:00

To join in with the PPH squad, I had one of 750mls (with a 3rd degree tear though, which would have added to the blood loss total) - although a PPH is indeed more likely with either a fast or a long labour!

TheLittleFriend · 07/01/2012 21:02

Flisspaps, out of interest, do you know how much a tear could add to the blood loss? I had a 2nd degree tear, but my dd came out fist first, so it couldn't be avoided. I'm wondering if I don't tear this time, would it make a big difference to blood loss?

Dozeyland · 07/01/2012 21:28

That is very odd Thelittlefriend! I had a 2nd degree tear too.

i keep wondering if i'll tear again?

Flisspaps I like to refer to my PPH as slight just to ease my mind for 2nd time around! I felt fine.. until about 30mins after then i noticed i was bleeding lots, then went as white as a ghost then rushed to observation with a drip to help boost me a little bit. I didnt realise how serious it was until i got home!

I was at a recent antenatal class and the midwife there said that we should not use it as more recent studies thought that it was not good a s caused bleeding postnatally ..... it s interesting to read that some of you had bleeeds after delivery
did everyone here use RLT ?

theseventhdwarf · 08/01/2012 07:42

have googled etc and unable to find anything to support what she said ... anyone else heard this?

Dozeyland · 08/01/2012 08:38

I've not heard of this?

OP posts:
Flisspaps · 08/01/2012 09:18

Not heard that and not been told to avoid it this time.

Don't know how much blood a tear adds to the total PPH amount - its all in the same 'pot' so impossible to tell what is from the tear and what is from the placenta, but it's all considered part of the PPH. If you've had a major PPH (1000ml or more) it won't make much difference anyway - a minor PPH is 500ml and you're unlikely to lose a further 500ml from a second degree tear.

Dozeyland · 08/01/2012 09:35

I really hope it doesn't happen again, especally is dp isn't going to make it
It all happened so fast, then all of a sudden I thought "wow, that doesn't feel right"...
Shows MW and then I got a canula in hand, then rushed to check if I had any placenta
Left in, they put my placenta down as "ragged" it was all bloody when they showed me.
The force and speed of dd's labour kind of made it all a mess...also DD's waters didn't break until her head was literally
Coming out, I found this the hard bit, they were "bulging" for ages and they wouldn't break
Them as I opted for natural delivery. I thought this would of made me tear..
They said it was dd's shoulders that tore me, but I didn't feel a thing tbh once her head
Was out, it just felt odd, but not painful compared to the bulging waters and contractions.
