Have a mild ish bout of thrush. Dont normally get it, currently 30 weeks pregnant. Had a look online and thought I was okay to use a cream but just been to boots and super drug and neither would sell me anything for thrush. Both said go to gp. Just rang doctors and next available appt is the 16th. Can I really not get an over the counter cream?

you have to have a doctors say so to buy the over the counter cream - it's becuase there is a pessary involved. the doc has to say yes you can have it.

My sister in law had this on New years day which was interesting to say the least trying to get a prescription!

I've been to the doctors twice with thrush, once in last pregnancy and once (so far) in this one. Both times they prescribed the pessary without even looking at me!
So I think it is a little bit silly that you can't buy it yourself. But at least it saves you money!

Is the cream not okay then? Does it have to be the pessary? Not that they would sell me either. . .

No reason not to give you the cream, they're being overcautious, probably worried about being sued. And the pessary can be used too anyway, I think (from what I remember being told when I had DS) that if you're late on in pregnancy you dont insert it as high up in case your cervix is opening.
But then I was 38w when I had it with DS and like I said, noone actually looked at me! The doctor just advised that I put it in with my fingers rather than the applicator thingy so it didnt go as far up.

Hmm, might have to send an unsuspecting work colleague in to get the cream!

The cream's fine. Pharmacists wouldn't sell me it either though. You can just say it's not for you mind you. Say your sister wanted you to pick it up. I was told by MW to ask for the 1% but they wouldn't even give me that...but didn't think of the having a sister trick (as I don't) until too late. I had what I thought was mild thush, but it turned out to be hi-vaginal thrush that was only slightly symptomatic externally, but it went on for about 8 weeks in end 1st into 2nd trimester.
It's worth keeping keeping a doctors appt. as they may want to give you the pessary in 3rd trimester to rule out there being any thrush internally. Oral thrush isn't any fun for newborns or for your nipps if your going to bf...
Some midwives can prescribe, so might be worth seeing if they can help.
Meanwhile eating (and applying externally only if it takes your fancy) natural, unflavoured yogs, drinking plenty of water, wearing cotton pants, hot-washing your pants in non-bio and going comando or at least avoiding clungy stuff in that reigon, when you can, will all help.

I had this at about 30 weeks also and I found that Sainsburys sold the pessary/cream combo on their shelves and I took it to the self service till. No problem. I had done lots and lots of googling and spoken to a couple of people on here and decided to use it.

As for not putting it very far up, I could hardly bloody reach to get it in at all! :o I nearly had to get DH to do the honours...

Oeisha · 04/01/2012 13:46

oh! and avoid fabric conditioner on pant washes too.

Santasjollys · 04/01/2012 13:50

I saw the gp when I had it with dc1 + 2, he prescribed pessaries, so with dc3 I just went to get them myself to save a trip to the doctors. Dh got some for me too, if it was the chemist, as they wouldn't sell me them.

stuffthenonsense · 04/01/2012 16:47

i sent DH to buy it after checking out the website, oh boy did it help! i still have some external itching and its driving me mad....i think thats because i actually ripped my skin and it is struggling to heal.....if anyone has any advice on that i would be grateful.

feekerry · 04/01/2012 19:42

i may don a large jacket and head to sainsburys tomorrow and grab some from a self service till as suggested!

lol re getting the pessary's up there, dont think i'd manage either!!!!x you have to be able to reach your fanjo first which with a large bump is increasingly not possible!!!!
stuffthenonsense have you tried the cream for the external itching? or how about natural yoghurt as mentioned above? supposed to help, esp if been in the fridge so nice and cool!

I'm 24 wks and hopefully getting a prescription for Canesten to pick up. I asked midwife yesterday, who said not to bother with an appointment, just put in a prescription request at reception and say she has recommended it. I have been using the external cream as it is apparently ok but I am thinking the pessary may be necessary. :(

I am miserable and uncomfortable and grumpy!

Cream is helping though.

Really hope these aren't persistent cases as mentioned above that go on for weeks, I think I might go mad as I am struggling after 3 days!
